CSuite Financial Partners has been retained by our client, a NYC based AI agent assistant developer for accounting firms, to place a Controller on their growing team!

The Controller will report directly to the Head of Finance, who is looking for a strategic partner capable of handling the technical accounting details while also building the systems that will scale as they grow.

This client is seeking a Controller to redefine the accounting function by applying the company’s proprietary AI agent technology to its own internal finance workflows. This role offers the unique opportunity to build an accounting department from the ground up, lead the first audit, and pursue a zero-day close at a high-growth company recently valued at over $1B. The successful candidate will work alongside a team of 30+ accountants and machine learning engineers to shape product development while scaling operations in one of the most significant AI-driven organizations in the economy

Accounting is structured, high-stakes, and essential to every business on earth. It's also one of the most underbuilt areas in technology. Our client builds AI agents that learn accounting the same way accountants do — by being agentic and doing the work. Rather than rebuilding accounting software, our client's agents operate within the existing accounting software ecosystem, completing complex tasks end-to-end for some of the largest accounting firms in the world. Agents can work for hours at a time, performing tasks like completing partnership tax workbooks, creating complex journal entries, debugging difficult reconciliations, and preparing technical accounting memos.

Think of it as Cursor for accounting — AI that dramatically multiplies accountant productivity by 10x to 100x. This company's capabilities improve monthly, with the rate of improvement itself accelerating, deploying production-grade, long-horizon agents at scale in the real economy.

This role is fully onsite in their Flatiron office, so ability to be in-office 5 days/wk is required

About the Team

The team has grown to 80 strong, fully in-person office around the corner from Madison Square Park in Flatiron.

Whiteboards everywhere. The whole team in one room. Not a lot of formal meetings, but interesting conversations happening constantly, about agent architectures, accounting edge cases, what the engineering looks like in five years.

You'll have a ton of responsibility from day one and be surrounded by people who are very good at what they do. The standards are high and the feedback is frequent. People here are kind and fun, but they also push each other to be better.

Most of the team eats lunch and dinner together. Many people hang out outside of work. Nobody has to. Everyone is passionate about something, whether that's accounting, ML, climbing, chess, meditation, philosophy, or ping pong. That energy carries into the work.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the integrity of the company's accounting operations, including the monthly close process, reconciliations, accruals, revenue recognition, and financial reporting
• Build and lead audit readiness from the ground up — designing the roadmap, organizing documentation, establishing controls, and preparing the company for its first external audit
• Design and implement scalable financial systems across accounts payable, procurement, expense management, purchasing approvals, vendor commitments, and spend reporting
• Apply an AI-forward mindset to redesign accounting workflows — determining where AI can own work, where human review matters, and how systems remain explainable and auditable at scale
• Serve as the internal owner of the company product for the finance function, interfacing directly with Product and Engineering teams to provide practitioner feedback and help shape the product roadmap
• Partner with an outsourced accounting team to manage day-to-day operations while focusing your time on building systems, automating processes, and driving toward a zero-day close
• Deliver clear spend visibility by vendor, team, category, product, customer, and cost driver — giving leadership accurate, timely financial information they can trust

(current company tech stack: NetSuite, Quickbooks, Excel, Claude AI/ML Tools, ERP Systems)

Ideal Candidate Profile

• 6 - 12 years of experience as an accountant or controller
• Experience managing and executing an external financial audit from beginning to end one or more times (must have)
• Willingness to perform hands- on accounting operations as an individual contributor (monthly close, audits)- must have
• Active CPA license
• Technical accounting experience (financial reporting, revenue recognition, accruals, capitalization, equity)
• Experience with workflow or process automation
• Experience with financial modeling, forecasting, and investment analysis
• Experience owning accounting operations in- house at a high- growth scaling company
• Experience building accounting processes and spend systems from scratch (accounts payable, procurement, expense management, purchasing approvals, vendor commitments, spend reporting)
• Experience standing up an accounting function or transitioning an organization from founder- led or manual processes to a scalable well- controlled function
