What they need

Empire Historic Developments, Inc.
Search conducted by Truthinkr Advisors
Salary: $140,000–$155,000 annually

Truthinkr Advisors has been entrusted by Empire Historic Developments, Inc. to lead the search and placement of its next Controller. We’re helping Empire find a strong accounting leader who enjoys taking ownership, supporting a team, and working closely with company leadership.

This position is with Empire Historic Developments. Truthinkr Advisors will serve as your initial point of contact throughout the recruiting process. We look forward to learning about your experience and sharing more about the opportunity.

Good with the numbers? Good with people? We’d like to meet you.

Empire Historic Developments is looking for a Controller who enjoys taking ownership, leading a team, and understanding how a business works.

Over 30 years, Empire has grown from a commercial real estate business into a company with interests in property management, restaurants, construction, and brokerage. That variety makes this an engaging role for someone who likes working across businesses and being close to the decisions that shape them.

You’ll work directly with the owner and the president, lead a five-person accounting team, and take responsibility for the accounting function across the businesses. Your judgment will matter, your work will be visible, and you’ll have opportunities to make processes work better.

Why this role stands out

  • A direct connection to leadership. Work closely with the owner and the president and help them understand the financial picture.
  • Room to take ownership. Bring your experience, make recommendations, and guide the accounting function.
  • Interesting work across several businesses. Build on your accounting skills through exposure to real estate, hospitality, construction, and brokerage.
  • A team to lead. Support accounting professionals, help them solve problems, and keep everyone moving in the same direction.
  • A chance to make a practical difference. Improve reporting, strengthen controls, and give leadership timely information they can use.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and support the accounting team across property accounting, restaurant accounting, accounts payable, cash accounting, tax, and payroll.
  • Oversee monthly and year-end close, reconciliations, financial statements, and analysis.
  • Maintain accurate records across multiple entities, including intercompany activity and cash transfers.
  • Manage cash flow and help leadership anticipate upcoming needs.
  • Support budgeting, tax projections, and coordination with outside tax preparers.
  • Ensure transactions—including property financings and refinancings—are recorded correctly.
  • Maintain accounting policies and internal controls, and identify practical process improvements.
  • Oversee accounting systems and reporting workflows, including Restaurant365, Paychex, and Yardi, the property accounting platform.
  • Coordinate insurance audits, support benefits administration, and assist with accounting setup for new entities or acquisitions.

What you’ll bring

You’re a strong accountant who can also lead people. You know your way around a balance sheet, can work through journal entries and complex transactions, and can explain financial issues clearly.

You’ll be a strong fit if you have:

  • Substantial accounting experience with responsibility for close, financial reporting, and team leadership.
  • Experience managing accounting across multiple entities or business units.
  • The ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and follow through.
  • A supportive leadership style and confidence communicating directly with owners and senior leaders.
  • A willingness to stay close to the details while keeping the broader business in view.

Property management, real estate, or restaurant accounting experience would be helpful.

We’re also interested in strong accounting leaders from retail, manufacturing, and other industries. Experience with Restaurant365 or property accounting systems is a plus.

Interested?

Send us your resume. We’d love to hear about the accounting teams you’ve led, the businesses you’ve supported, and what you’d bring to Empire.
