Controller - Manufacturing Experience Required

About The Company

Our client is a well-established, family-owned manufacturer of premium, design-driven products for commercial markets. The company has ~30 million in revenue and its own manufacturing facility in Central Massachusetts. It has a long record of consistent profitability, strong cash flow, and steady growth.

Job Summary

The role is about 75% hands-on accounting and reporting and 25% financial planning and analysis. The first priority is owning the general ledger, month-end close, and management reporting, and shortening the close. From there, the Controller will help build the company's first formal budgeting and forecasting process.

Key responsibilities

• Own the general ledger, account reconciliations, journal entries, and the full month-end and year-end close.
• Redesign the close process to deliver accurate monthly financial statements on a shorter, consistent timeline.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports for the VP of Finance and the owner.
• Manage standard cost accounting, inventory valuation, and inventory controls.
• Calculate and record accruals and payments for sales commissions, royalties, and channel rebate programs.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll, and support the accounting staff.
• Work with the VP of Finance to build the company's first annual budget and rolling forecasts.
• Prepare budget-to-actual reporting that gives department leaders the numbers they need to run their areas.
• Provide operational and financial analysis to support pricing, margin, and growth decisions.
• Prepare cash flow reporting and support banking relationships and the company's line of credit.
• Prepare schedules and support for the annual financial statement review with the external accounting firm.
• Support S-corporation tax reporting and owner pass-through matters with the outside CPA firm.
• Strengthen internal controls and segregation of duties across the finance function.
• Make full use of the company's ERP system for financial reporting and analysis.

What success looks like

• A reliable, timely monthly close and a reporting package leadership trusts.
• A first annual budget and forecast that department leaders use to run their areas.
• Full ownership of the finance function and readiness to step into the VP of Finance role.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years as a Controller or Assistant Controller.
• Manufacturing experience, including standard cost accounting and inventory.
• Deep, hands-on command of GL accounting, month-end close, and financial reporting, with a record of shortening and improving the close.
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and budget-to-actual reporting.
• Able to work on-site in Central Massachusetts.

Preferred

• CPA or public accounting background.
• Experience with S-corporations and pass-through tax reporting.
• Experience accounting for sales commissions, royalties, or channel rebate programs.
• Experience in a privately held or family-owned business, working closely with ownership.
• Comfortable in a lean finance team and doing the detailed work personally.
