About the Company

Our client is a private equity-backed specialty construction platform focused on building a leading group of concrete and construction businesses. Through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions, the company is bringing together strong local operators while building the financial, operational, and administrative infrastructure needed to support a significantly larger organization.

They are seeking a Controller to help build and lead the accounting function as the company enters its next phase of growth.

This is a hands-on leadership role with significant exposure to the CFO, operating companies, and private equity sponsor. The Controller will be responsible for strengthening the accounting foundation across the organization, establishing scalable processes and controls, and ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting as the platform grows.

What You'll Do

The Controller will own the day-to-day accounting function across the platform and its operating companies, including:

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process across multiple legal entities.
  • Establish consistent accounting policies, procedures, and close processes across acquired businesses.
  • Produce accurate GAAP financial statements and consolidated reporting.
  • Manage consolidation, intercompany accounting, and elimination entries.
  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee account reconciliations, accruals, fixed assets, leases, payroll-related accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Support percentage-of-completion / ASC 606 accounting and WIP reporting for construction operations.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate internal controls while keeping processes practical for a growing organization.
  • Lead the company's financial statement audit and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Support purchase accounting and the integration of newly acquired businesses into the platform's accounting processes.
  • Partner with operations to improve job-level financial reporting and the accuracy of project costs, margins, WIP, and profitability.
  • Oversee and develop accounting staff across the organization.
  • Improve accounting systems, reporting tools, and workflows as the company scales.
  • Support the CFO with lender reporting, private equity reporting, forecasting, cash management, and other financial analysis as needed.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who combines strong technical accounting knowledge with a willingness to get into the details and solve problems.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful experience leading a close process.
  • Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial statement preparation.
  • Experience with construction, specialty contracting, project-based businesses, or another environment involving WIP and percentage-of-completion accounting strongly preferred.
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting and consolidations.
  • Experience supporting financial statement audits.
  • CPA preferred but not required for an exceptional candidate.
  • Experience in a private equity-backed, acquisitive, or rapidly growing business is a plus.
  • Experience integrating acquisitions or standardizing accounting processes across multiple businesses is a significant plus.
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working with accounting and ERP systems.

The Right Person for This Role

This position will be particularly attractive to someone who enjoys building rather than simply maintaining .

You should be comfortable moving between high-level accounting decisions and detailed execution. On one day, you may be working with the CFO on accounting policy or an acquisition; on another, you may be digging into a reconciliation, helping resolve a WIP issue, or redesigning a close process.

The successful candidate will be:

  • Hands-on and willing to work in the details.
  • Organized and disciplined about deadlines.
  • Comfortable operating in an evolving environment.
  • Able to identify problems and develop practical solutions without waiting for perfect information.
  • Capable of building processes that are scalable without adding unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • A strong communicator who can work effectively with both accounting personnel and operational leaders.
  • Interested in developing a team and raising the accounting capabilities of the organization.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to join a growing private equity-backed construction platform at an important point in its development and have a meaningful role in building the finance organization.

Rather than inheriting a finished accounting function, the Controller will have the opportunity to help design how accounting operates across the platform, develop the team, improve systems and processes, integrate future acquisitions, and build the financial infrastructure required to support substantial growth.

The role will work closely with the CFO and will have significant visibility across the organization.
