Our company provides DOT and non-DOT drug and alcohol testing services nationwide. We are building a national platform by acquiring well-run, founder-owned drug testing businesses and connecting them to shared finance, technology, sales, and operations support. We have completed several acquisitions and have more underway. We’re headquartered in Houston.

The Role
We are hiring our first dedicated Controller to run the company’s accounting and finance operations. This is a hands-on, individual-contributor role. You will be the company’s accounting function, doing the day-to-day bookkeeping yourself while also owning the monthly close, acquisition integration, payroll, tax compliance, and insurance. You’ll report directly to the CEO and work closely with our operations and technology leads.

This role is a good fit for someone who likes building processes, isn’t afraid of messy inherited books, and wants a central role in a growing company. As the company grows, we expect to add accounting staff under this position.

What You’ll Do

• Handle all day-to-day bookkeeping, including entering and coding transactions, processing vendor bills and payments, recording deposits, invoicing clients, applying payments, managing expense receipts, and keeping the ledger clean and current across all entities.
• Own full-cycle accounting for multiple entities and locations, including AP, AR, cash management, bank and credit card reconciliations, and the monthly close on an accrual basis.
• Prepare consolidated and location-level monthly financials, and track key metrics such as revenue by service line, AR aging, and consortium billing.
• Lead the finance side of acquisition integration. This includes taking over books from acquired companies, converting cash-basis records to accrual, mapping charts of accounts, setting up opening balances, and moving new locations onto our systems and processes.
• Run multi-state payroll with our payroll provider, including onboarding employees from acquired companies, benefits deductions, and payroll tax filings.
• Manage tax compliance, including sales and use tax, franchise tax, property tax, 1099s, and payroll tax, and coordinate with our outside CPAs on annual income tax returns.
• Manage the company’s insurance program, including renewals, certificates of insurance, adding new locations and entities, and coordinating claims with our broker.
• Support billing and collections, including recurring consortium and client invoicing.
• Build and improve internal controls, approval workflows, and process documentation as the company scales.
• Work with our technology team on the systems that connect billing, operations, and the general ledger.

What We’re Looking For

• 5+ years of accounting experience, including responsibility for month-end close.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent experience.
• Strong understanding of accrual accounting.
• Comfortable doing transactional bookkeeping alongside higher-level accounting work.
• Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-directed. Able to manage competing priorities with limited oversight.
• Willing to travel occasionally (about 10%) to acquired locations during integration.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
