Overview

Lake of the Woods Association (LOWA) is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to oversee the Association's daily accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, safeguarding Association assets, and supporting organizational budgeting, forecasting, and financial audits.

The Controller provides direct leadership and supervision to the Accounting and Member Services teams while working closely with senior management and department leaders to support the Association's financial and operational objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervise the Accounting and Member Services teams, including staff development, performance management, and daily workflow coordination.
• Oversee the monthly financial closing process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and preparation of financial statements and reports.
• Develop, implement, and monitor internal accounting controls to safeguard Association assets and ensure compliance with established financial policies and procedures.
• Manage and reconcile balance sheet accounts, including cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, fixed assets, and reserves.
• Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process, monitor departmental financial performance, and provide budget-to-actual variance analysis.
• Coordinate the annual external financial audit and conduct periodic internal reviews of accounting procedures and financial controls.
• Oversee essential accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, and applicable tax filings.
• Serve as a financial resource to senior leadership and department managers, providing financial analysis and operational guidance.
• Administer and support the Association's accounting and membership management software systems.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• 5–10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager position.
• Demonstrated experience supervising accounting professionals and managing financial operations.
• Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting, general ledger accounting, and internal controls.
• Experience with budgeting, financial analysis, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and integrated accounting software.
• Strong analytical, organizational, leadership, and communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Experience with financial audits and accounting within a homeowners association (HOA), private club, or similar organization is preferred.
• Experience with Vantaca or comparable accounting/association management software is preferred.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and successfully complete a criminal background check.
