What they need

Controller

DM Companies · Wayzata, MN · Full-time · In office

$140,000 – $160,000 per year, plus annual performance bonus

ABOUT DM COMPANIES

DM Companies is a vertically integrated real estate owner and operator founded in 2006 and based in Wayzata, Minnesota. We own, develop and manage roughly 1,500 apartment units across 40-plus buildings in the Twin Cities and Rochester, and we run the businesses that support them: a property management company, an in-house maintenance company, a private lending company, two restaurants and a commercial net-leased portfolio. About 45 people work here. Decisions get made in a room with the owner and the CFO, not by committee, and the person in this seat sees how deals are underwritten, financed and closed.

THE ROLE

We are replacing our Accounting Manager position with a Controller who owns the accounting function outright. Our current Accounting Manager is transitioning out on good terms and will overlap with you for the handoff. You will report to the CFO, supervise a full-time Staff Accountant and a part-time Accounting & Operations Specialist, and be the person the CFO reviews rather than the person he backs up.

It is a wide seat: multi-entity real estate accounting, tax compliance, lender and investor reporting, and payroll, benefits and HR administration for the whole organization. We would rather you know that now than discover it in month two. In exchange you get real ownership, direct access to the people who make decisions, and a mandate to automate anything that should not be done by hand.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

  • The monthly close across ~43 property entities and four operating companies: bank reconciliations for ~70 accounts by the 5th, reviewed and variance-explained financial packages by the 20th
  • Review and approval of all journal entries, accruals, allocations and intercompany activity; the chart of accounts and the integrity of our AppFolio data
  • Management fee billing, credit card coding, utility and tenant billbacks, and CAM accruals and annual true-ups for the retail assets
  • A monthly financial review with the CFO for every property and operating company, with a written issues list and a recommendation on each item, plus budget-to-actual reporting and the annual budget cycle
  • The tax calendar end to end: partnership, corporate, individual, foundation and multi-state filings (MN, AZ, TN, CO), working directly with our outside CPA firms; the annual audit for our HUD-financed property; property tax accruals; 1099s and resident CRPs
  • Monthly and quarterly reporting to third-party owners, JV partners and lenders, including covenant certificates and agency reporting
  • Loan servicing for our private lending company: borrower interest invoicing, the loan book schedule, maturity tracking and participation accounting
  • Monthly financials and operating analysis (prime cost, labor, sales mix) for both restaurant locations
  • Payroll across all companies and pay cycles, statutory payroll reporting, benefits administration and open enrollment, onboarding and offboarding, employee records and HR compliance. You are the first call for employee pay and benefits questions.
  • Your team's task calendars and work product. Anything clerical gets done by your team, automated, or eliminated; it does not go back to the CFO.

WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON WITH THE CFO

  • Underwriting models and proformas for acquisitions and development: you build and maintain the model and assemble diligence financials
  • Financial onboarding of new management contracts, which we win regularly
  • Treasury and cash positioning; you prepare, the CFO approves
  • Family office support for the ownership group's personal entities and trusts, which requires discretion
  • Systems and automation, including AI tools we are actively building into the accounting function

WHO DOES WELL HERE

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including time as a Controller, Assistant Controller or Accounting Manager
  • You have owned a monthly close in a multi-entity environment, not just worked inside one
  • Real estate accounting: property-level financials, security deposits, mortgage and escrow activity, intercompany allocations. CAM experience is a plus.
  • You have run payroll yourself and are willing to own HR administration as a permanent part of the job
  • You have worked directly with an outside CPA firm through a full tax cycle
  • Strong Excel. You build schedules and models rather than just reading them.
  • You can describe a process you improved, with a before and after
  • You are comfortable in an owner-operator environment where the lane is not always defined

Preferred: CPA; AppFolio, Yardi or RealPage; family office or closely held business experience; HUD or agency reporting; loan servicing; restaurant or multi-unit hospitality accounting.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • $140,000 – $160,000 base, depending on experience, plus an annual performance bonus
  • Health insurance from day one, with 50% of premiums paid by the company; dental, vision and life insurance
  • Paid time off starting at 10 days and increasing with tenure, plus 8 paid holidays
  • In-office role at our Wayzata office on Lake Minnetonka

Apply through Indeed with a resume. A cover letter is not required, but a short note on the largest close you have owned, and what you changed about it, will get our attention.
