What they need

Controller: Heavy Civil Construction | Wolfforth, TX

Schedule: Full-time, on-site, Monday-Friday

About the Role

West Texas Paving has been in business since 1981. We are a vertically integrated heavy civil contractor with our own paving crews, asphalt plant, quarry, and equipment fleet. Our accounting covers far more than job cost, and we are growing from a single entity into multiple divisions.

We are rebuilding our accounting department and need a Controller to lead it. You will supervise a team of three, install disciplined close and reconciliation processes, and report directly to the CFO. The CFO wants to step out of day-to-day accounting, so this role owns it: accurate books, on schedule, with every balance supported. Our target is a monthly close by the 5th of the following month.

We issue annual audited financials through a national CPA firm. You will own the audit process and the support behind it.

What You’ll Do

  • Supervise and train three accounting staff: assign work, set deadlines, review output, and build backup coverage for critical functions.
  • Own the monthly close and financial statements, with a documented close calendar and reconciliation schedule.
  • Reconcile all material balance-sheet accounts, subsidiary ledgers, bank accounts, and debt schedules.
  • Prepare, review, and approve journal and adjusting entries.
  • Oversee AP, AR, cash receipts, and payroll accounting.
  • Maintain job-cost accuracy by job, phase, cost code, department, and equipment unit.
  • Oversee inventory, material transfers, plant, quarry, equipment, fixed-asset, and depreciation accounting.
  • Investigate discrepancies to the root cause and correct the process, not just the transaction.
  • Produce reporting on profitability, costs, cash, asset utilization, and variances.
  • Own the annual audit: prepare schedules, support, and responses to the external auditors.
  • Document procedures, maintain internal controls, and structure the books for multi-division reporting.
  • Learn Foundation Accounting (our ERP) thoroughly and improve workflows, reporting, and automation.

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience
  • Experience running a monthly close and preparing financial statements
  • Strong GL and balance-sheet reconciliation skills
  • Working knowledge of AP, AR, cash, accruals, fixed assets, and inventory
  • Experience supporting an external financial statement audit
  • Experience supervising accounting staff
  • Advanced Excel
  • Track record of resolving problems independently and following them through to completion

Preferred

  • Construction, heavy civil, manufacturing, mining, or materials job-cost experience
  • Construction ERP experience (Foundation, Sage 300, Viewpoint, Spectrum, CMiC, ComputerEase, or similar). Comparable platforms are transferable.
  • CPA or significant public accounting experience

Why This Role

  • Direct reporting line to the CFO and real authority over the department.
  • A chance to build the team, processes, and controls instead of inheriting a finished structure.
  • An established company, in business since 1981 and growing into multiple divisions, with you shaping the accounting structure as it grows.
  • Unusual variety: construction, asphalt, quarry, equipment, and inventory accounting in one company.
