Controller

Matchbook Wine Company, a family-owned winery in Yolo County, is seeking a Controller to join our collaborative, entrepreneurial team. Working directly with ownership, this position oversees and actively participates in day-to-day accounting operations while providing timely, accurate financial information to support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic decision-making. Key Responsibilities

Daily Accounting Operations

• Manage staff on accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, and general ledger activities.
• Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and monthly closing schedules.
• Oversee bank and credit card reconciliations.
• Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Prepare monthly borrowing base reports for bank.
• Prepare quarterly covenant reports for the bank.
• Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Provide variance analysis and financial insights to management.
• Monitor cash flow and assist with liquidity planning.

Compliance & Controls

• Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
• Maintain appropriate internal controls for a small business environment.
• Coordinate with external CPA firm for tax preparation and annual reviews.
• Support audits and regulatory filings and support bank reporting requirements.

Collaboration & Support

• Partner with operations, sales, and ownership to provide financial guidance.
• Respond to internal inquiries regarding financial data and reporting.
• Supervise and train administrative or accounting support staff.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
• 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Experience in alcohol beverage or consumer products preferred.
• Familiarity with inventory management, manufacturing costs, and supply chain operations.
• Experience with ERP systems and financial planning tools.
• Understands budgeting, forecasting, profitability analysis, and working capital management.
• Experience with process improvement and operational reporting.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong working knowledge of GAAP.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Advanced proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Clear communication skills and ability to interact with non-financial team members.

Work Environment

• Full-time position in a collaborative, small-team setting, 100% onsite in administration office in Zamora CA.
• Requires flexibility during month-end close and reporting periods.
