Controller - Homebuilding

Controller for a production homebuilder.

Location: Tampa, FL - On-site

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

Must have homebuilding experience!

Compensation: $140k-$160k base, 25% target bonus

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Controller to join our rapidly growing homebuilding organization. This is a critical finance leadership role responsible for all accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. You will play a key role in supporting the company's expansion while maintaining the highest standards of financial integrity and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll
• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
• Manage the general ledger and ensure accurate recording of all transactions
• Develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Conduct monthly and year-end close processes; identify and resolve discrepancies
• Manage the audit process and coordinate with external auditors
• Oversee accounts payable and receivable operations; optimize cash flow management
• Prepare financial analysis and variance reports for management and ownership
• Lead and mentor the accounting team; hire and develop accounting staff as needed
• Ensure compliance with tax regulations and manage tax planning strategies
• Implement and maintain accounting systems and software; evaluate process improvements
• Support business planning, budgeting, and forecasting activities
• Manage property and equipment accounting, including depreciation and disposals

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• CPA or CPA candidate preferred
• 8+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a controller or senior accounting role
• Strong experience in homebuilding, construction, or real estate development preferred
• Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (SAP, QuickBooks Enterprise, or similar)
• Advanced Excel skills; ability to create models and complex analyses
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting standards
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Clear communication skills and ability to present financial information to non-financial audiences
• High integrity and attention to detail

Desired Attributes

• Experience managing accounting teams through periods of rapid growth
• Familiarity with homebuilding-specific accounting (units, lot accounting, warranty reserves)
• Knowledge of construction lending and draw processes
• Experience with financial system implementations or upgrades
