What they need

Washington Academy is currently accepting applications for a Custodian - Alumni Building (Second Shift).

This is a full-time year-round position.

The work schedule for this position is Monday–Friday, 2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m. (includes 30-minute unpaid meal break; 40 paid hours/week). Adjusted day shift during summer and school vacations.

Pay range is $17.50 – $18.50 per hour, based on experience.

Position Summary

The Second Shift Custodian for the Alumni Building is responsible for keeping the building clean, safe, sanitary, and ready for instruction each school day. Working after students are dismissed, this position performs daily cleaning of classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas, performs routine floor care, supports evening activities held in the building, and secures the building at the end of the shift.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Alumni Building — Daily Cleaning

  • Clean and service all classrooms, offices, hallways, stairwells, entryways, and common areas in the Alumni Building each weekday after students are dismissed.
  • Empty trash and recycling; replace liners; transport to designated collection points.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms daily: toilets, urinals, sinks, fixtures, partitions, mirrors, and floors; restock soap, paper towels, and toilet tissue.
  • Sweep, dust-mop, and damp-mop hard floors; vacuum carpets and rugs; spot-clean carpet stains.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces (door handles, push bars, light switches, railings, desktops, water fountains/bottle fillers).
  • Clean interior and entry door glass, whiteboards (as requested by teachers), and spot-clean walls.
  • Perform periodic tasks on a rotating schedule: high dusting, vents, baseboards, auto-scrubbing, buffing/burnishing.
  • Secure the building at end of shift: check that windows and exterior doors are closed and locked, turn off lights, and report any security concerns.

Evening Activities & Support

  • Support evening meetings and events held in the Alumni Building (room resets, trash, restroom checks).
  • Assist with coverage in other campus buildings when directed by the Facilities & Transportation Director.
  • Coordinate with daytime porter support (Head of Custodial Services, Head of Transportation, and Floater Custodian) on restroom, trash, and floor needs to hand off at the start of the shift.

Cross-Training & Rotation

  • Be fully cross-trained in the Fine Arts / Gymnasium Building custodial routine (cleaning checklist, event procedures, supply closets, equipment, and lock-up/alarm procedures) so the two second-shift custodians can back each other up.
  • When the Fine Arts / Gymnasium Building custodian is absent, cover that building’s priority areas (restrooms, locker rooms, trash, spills, and any scheduled events) in coordination with the Floater and the Facilities & Transportation Director.
  • Rotate assignments with the Fine Arts / Gymnasium Building custodian periodically (for example, a week at a time or during school breaks) as scheduled by the Facilities & Transportation Director, to keep cross-training current and share event workload.

All Assignments

  • Report building maintenance issues (leaks, lighting, HVAC, plumbing, broken fixtures, safety hazards) through the Academy’s work-order process and to the Facilities & Transportation Director.
  • Address cleaning-quality findings from building inspections conducted by the Head of Custodial Services, and follow posted building checklists and cleaning standards.
  • Follow the Academy’s Hazard Communication Program and Chemical Hygiene Plan: use only approved chemicals, maintain labeling, and keep SDS accessible; wear required PPE.
  • Respond to spills, bodily fluid clean-ups, and other urgent cleaning needs using bloodborne pathogen procedures.
  • Maintain assigned custodial closets, carts, and equipment in a clean, organized, and safe condition; report low supplies and equipment needing repair to the Facilities & Transportation Director.
  • Complete required trainings (Hazard Communication/SDS, Bloodborne Pathogens, equipment safety, emergency procedures).
  • Participate in summer and school-vacation deep cleaning (floor stripping/refinishing, carpet extraction, furniture moving, window and wall washing) on an adjusted day-shift schedule as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Facilities & Transportation Director.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (HiSET/GED).
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions, cleaning schedules, product labels, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Successful completion of Maine Department of Education fingerprinting and criminal history record check (required for all school employees) and a pre-employment reference check.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality; ability to work independently on second shift with limited direct supervision.
  • Ability to interact respectfully and appropriately with students, staff, families, and visitors.

Preferred

  • One or more years of custodial, janitorial, or housekeeping experience, preferably in a school, institutional, or commercial setting.
  • Experience operating floor care equipment (auto-scrubber, burnisher, carpet extractor, wet/dry vacuum).
  • Familiarity with green cleaning practices, chemical dilution systems, and bloodborne pathogen procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and climbing stairs and ladders throughout the shift.
  • Regularly lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. (trash, supplies, furniture, equipment); occasional team lifts of heavier items.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals (with appropriate PPE), dust, noise from equipment, and outdoor weather when handling trash, recycling, and entrances.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
