Role Overview

As a Cybersecurity PhD Mentor, you will guide exceptional high school students through flexible, paid capstone projects in cybersecurity and related fields. You’ll be matched with students based on your professional background and their goals, and you’ll help them turn their curiosity into meaningful, real-world work.

Sessions focus on practical guidance, research and industry insights and career development rather than academic tutoring. This role is ideal for someone who loves their field, enjoys sharing what a career in cybersecurity really looks like and wants to make a lasting impact on students early in their journey.

What You’ll Do

• Mentor students one-on-one - Lead virtual sessions that guide students through their capstone projects from idea to finished work
• Capstone Project Guidance - Help students define a focused question, plan their approach and carry out projects in areas like network security, cryptography, digital forensics, secure software development or AI security
• Share Real-World Insight - Give students an honest look at research, industry and government paths in cybersecurity so they can make informed decisions about their future
• Build Practical Skills - Introduce students to how security professionals work, including reading research, assessing vulnerabilities and communicating findings clearly
• Promote Responsible Practice - Ground students in the ethical and legal standards that guide security work
• Career Development - Advise students on majors, programs, certifications and opportunities that align with their interests and long-term goals
• Collaborate with Internal Teams - Work with our Student Success team to keep each student’s project aligned with their broader goals

What Skills And Experience You’ll Need

• PhD in Cybersecurity, Information Security or a closely related field (preferred)
• We also welcome candidates with a PhD in Computer Science who currently work or have worked professionally in cybersecurity
• Professional experience in research, academia or industry
• Passion for mentoring young people and making cybersecurity accessible
• Ability to explain advanced concepts to high school students without losing rigor
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to give clear, structured feedback
• Reliability and professionalism when working independently in a remote setting
• Experience in teaching, mentoring or supervising students is a plus
