What they need
Are you geared up to inspire young riders around Selwyn?
At the Selwyn Sports Trust, we’re out in the community every day, helping tamariki build confidence, skills and a love of being active.
We’re looking for enthusiastic instructors to help deliver our iBike Cycle Safety Programme across Selwyn. We’re after people who share our ethos and are passionate about providing quality experiences for tamariki.
The Selwyn Sports Trust delivers its iBike Cycle Safety Programme to 30 Selwyn Primary Schools, working with 8 to 11-year-olds to improve their cycling skills, build confidence and encourage them to cycle safely.
Who are you?
You are positive, energetic and excited to help foster a lifelong love of cycling for our tamariki. You’ll have the patience and attitude to work in this rewarding environment, seeing children gain confidence on their bike on a daily basis.
Perhaps you come from a teaching or coaching background and are looking for a change of pace? This is a great opportunity to combine your enthusiasm for being active with teaching valuable lifelong skills in a fun, community-focused environment.
The ability to safely ride a bike is essential for this role, as you will be actively involved in delivering the programme alongside the students.
What experience is needed?
Previous experience in cycle instruction is desirable; however, full training will be provided to candidates who show a willingness to learn and enthusiasm to be part of the programme.
To set you up for success, you’ll have a natural ability to coach, communicate with and manage groups of school students. You’ll be comfortable with the physical aspects of the programme and bring a positive attitude to every session.
You’ll naturally be a patient person. The programme will see you interact with students who are too scared to sit on their bike, alongside students who think they have what it takes to enter the X-Games, all in one session. Therefore, the ability to practice patience and understand the differing needs of the students is required.
What’s on offer?
This is a contracting opportunity, with work available sporadically between 8:45am and 3:00pm during primary school terms. Hours and days will vary depending on school bookings and programme requirements.
You won’t be expected to work during school holidays, although you may be required to attend professional development sessions and meetings, which will be compensated.
Immediate start
This position is available for an immediate start. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and we may contact suitable candidates and hold interviews before the advertised closing date.
This means we reserve the right to close the position early if the right candidate/s is found.
If you have any questions about the role, or would like to have a chat before applying, contact Darren Moon at [email protected].
If you think you’ve got what it takes to teach our tamariki an essential life skill, we’d love to hear from you!
Closing Date: 16/10/2026
