Data Analyst – Power BI / DAX / SQL

Role Overview

As the Data Analyst, you will play a key role in helping the business make better, faster and more informed decisions through accurate reporting, meaningful analysis and actionable insights.

Key Responsibilities

1. Power BI Reporting & Dashboard Ownership

• Take day-to-day ownership of the Power BI reporting environment, ensuring business-critical reports and dashboards remain accurate, reliable and relevant.
• Design, build, maintain and continuously improve Power BI dashboards and reports across the business.
• Develop new reporting solutions in response to changing business requirements and strategic priorities.
• Build and optimise data models, DAX measures, Power Query transformations and reporting logic.
• Create clear, intuitive and interactive visualisations that enable stakeholders to quickly understand business performance.
• Monitor dashboard and report performance and identify opportunities to improve speed, efficiency and usability.
• Maintain consistency across reporting definitions, calculations and KPIs.
• Act as an internal Power BI subject-matter expert, providing guidance and support to colleagues using reporting tools.

2. Data Analysis & Commercial Insights

• Analyse data from multiple sources to identify trends, patterns, anomalies, risks and commercial opportunities.
• Go beyond reporting what happened by investigating why performance changed and what action the business should consider.
• Translate complex datasets into clear, concise and actionable business insights.
• Develop a strong data narrative that helps stakeholders understand the commercial meaning behind the numbers.
• Conduct analysis to support teams across Commercial, Finance, Marketing and other business functions.
• Identify meaningful KPIs and performance measures aligned with business objectives.
• Proactively highlight significant movements, emerging trends and potential areas of concern.
• Provide recommendations based on analysis rather than simply presenting data.

3. SQL, Data Modelling & Data Management

• Use SQL to extract, query, combine and analyse information from relational databases and other available data sources.
• Develop and maintain efficient data models to support Power BI reporting and analysis.
• Understand relationships between different datasets and ensure information is structured appropriately for reporting.
• Support the integration of information from multiple business systems and platforms.
• Work with relevant internal and external stakeholders to resolve data-model and database issues.

4. Data Quality & Governance

• Perform regular data validation, reconciliation and quality checks to maintain confidence in business reporting.
• Investigate discrepancies between reports, systems and underlying datasets and follow issues through to resolution.
• Maintain clear documentation covering data sources, KPI definitions, calculations, DAX logic, reporting methodologies and assumptions.
• Help establish consistent reporting definitions and ensure they are applied across the organisation.
• Work closely with the company's third-party data warehouse provider to ensure the database remains accurate, current and fit for business requirements.
• Clearly communicate required database, reporting and data-model changes and follow through to ensure they are implemented correctly.
• Proactively identify potential data-quality risks before they affect business decisions.

5. Reporting Automation & Process Improvement

• Identify manual or repetitive reporting activities that can be simplified, standardised or automated.
• Develop solutions that reduce manual intervention, improve reporting speed and minimise the risk of human error.
• Review existing reporting processes and recommend more efficient approaches where appropriate.
• Explore opportunities to use automation, AI and emerging technologies to improve data analysis and reporting.
• Support the development of a more scalable reporting and analytics environment as the business grows.
• Measure the impact of improvements where possible, including time saved, manual steps removed, improved accuracy or faster access to information.

6. Stakeholder Management & Business Partnership

• Work closely with stakeholders to understand their business questions, reporting requirements and decision-making needs.
• Translate business requirements into appropriate reports, dashboards, analysis and data solutions.
• Communicate analytical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Challenge requirements constructively where a different analytical approach would provide greater business value.
• Build strong relationships across departments and proactively identify opportunities where data can better support their objectives.
• Manage competing reporting and analytical priorities while maintaining accuracy and agreed delivery timelines.

7. Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

• Maintain clear documentation for key dashboards, datasets, calculations and reporting processes.
• Ensure critical reporting knowledge is documented rather than dependent on individual knowledge.
• Provide guidance and training to colleagues on the appropriate interpretation and use of reports.
• Support the development of greater data literacy and self-service reporting capability across the business.

Skills & Experience

Essential

• Proven experience as a Data Analyst, BI Analyst, Power BI Analyst or similar analytical role.

• Strong proficiency in Power BI, including:

  • DAX
  • Power Query
  • Data modelling
  • Dashboard development
  • Report optimisation

• Strong SQL skills with experience querying and analysing relational databases.

• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

• Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving capability.

• Experience working with complex datasets and combining information from multiple sources.

• Ability to identify meaningful trends, patterns and anomalies from data.

• Ability to translate analysis into clear commercial insights and recommendations.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong stakeholder-management skills.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently with a high level of ownership.

Desirable

• Previous experience within an E-commerce, retail or consumer business.
• Understanding of ETL processes, data pipelines and data architecture.
• Experience working with data warehouses.
• Experience integrating information from multiple platforms and business systems.
• Experience with reporting and process automation.
• Understanding of commercial, financial, marketing and E-commerce KPIs.
• Experience working with third-party data or technology providers.
