Data & Backend Engineer - Cologne or Munich

An established international consultancy operating at the intersection of business, technology and digital transformation is looking for a Data & Backend Engineer to join its internal technology team.

What you'll be doing

• Designing, building and maintaining database integrations and REST APIs to connect business systems and applications.
• Developing and maintaining data warehouse structures, ensuring data quality, consistency and governance.
• Building and improving data and AI pipelines that support business applications and emerging AI solutions.
• Implementing CI/CD pipelines and strengthening DevOps practices to ensure reliable, scalable deployments.
• Contributing to backend architecture and helping shape the technical foundations of the company's internal technology landscape.
• Working closely with an international IT team, taking ownership of projects and bringing ideas forward to improve existing systems and processes.

What they're looking for

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering or a related field.
• At least 5 years of professional experience in data engineering, data warehouse development, database design, API development or a similar area.
• Strong SQL skills and hands-on experience with ETL/ELT pipelines.
• Experience building APIs and integrating databases and business systems.
• Familiarity with DevOps tools and CI/CD processes, ideally Azure DevOps or a comparable platform.
• An interest in AI infrastructure, with experience integrating LLMs being an advantage.
• Strong problem-solving skills, a practical mindset and the ability to work collaboratively.
• Business-fluent English; German language skills are an advantage.
