Job description:
Data Center Estimator
NetBeam | Chantilly, VA
Reports to: Program Manager
Position Overview
The Estimator supports the development, pricing and pursuit of NetBeam’s structured cabling, fiber, low-voltage and data center infrastructure opportunities.
This position works closely with Operations, Business Development, Project Management, Procurement and company leadership to develop accurate and competitive estimates while clearly identifying project scope, assumptions, risks and opportunities.
As NetBeam continues to grow and develop its operating structure, the Estimator is also expected to contribute to the development and improvement of estimating standards, tools, processes, historical cost information and the transition of projects from opportunity through execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work, RFPs/RFQs, customer requirements and other bid documents.
- Prepare labor and material estimates, bills of material (BOM/BOL), takeoffs and supporting pricing documentation.
- Develop labor-hour and productivity assumptions based on scope, schedule, location, shift requirements and field conditions.
- Account for materials, equipment, subcontractors, travel, lodging/per diem, logistics, schedule requirements and other project costs.
- Develop clear scopes of work, assumptions, exclusions, clarifications and supporting proposal information.
- Obtain and evaluate pricing from manufacturers, distributors, subcontractors and other partners.
- Identify value-engineering opportunities and alternative solutions when appropriate.
- Participate in bid strategy and estimate-review meetings with Operations, Business Development and leadership.
- Support Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM), budgetary and formal bid development based on the maturity of each opportunity.
- Participate in site walks, customer discussions, RFIs and scope-clarification activities as needed.
- Identify scope gaps, project risks, schedule concerns and other conditions that could affect cost or successful execution.
- Maintain organized estimating files, pricing information, assumptions and supporting documentation.
- Participate in post-award handoffs so Operations and Project Management understand the estimate, budget, assumptions, risks and commitments.
- Review estimate-to-actual performance with Operations and apply lessons learned to future estimates.
- Help develop and maintain NetBeam’s estimating processes, templates, cost information, historical data and standards.
- Support other estimating, preconstruction, operational and business-development activities as business needs evolve.
Role Expectations
- Produce complete, accurate, competitive and executable estimates.
- Maintain clear documentation supporting pricing, labor assumptions, scope, exclusions and risk.
- Communicate proactively when information is incomplete or when cost, schedule or scope risks are identified.
- Work collaboratively across Business Development, Operations, Project Management, Procurement and leadership.
- Manage multiple priorities and bid deadlines with organization and follow-through.
- Take ownership of assigned estimates while seeking input and escalating when needed.
- Stay engaged in project handoffs and estimate-to-actual performance, and use results to improve future estimates.
- Remain flexible as NetBeam’s processes, systems, customers and organization continue to develop.
Required Qualifications
- Prior estimating experience (labor and material estimating, takeoffs, BOM/BOL, project costing).
- Prior data center experience.
- Working knowledge of structured cabling, fiber, low-voltage, telecommunications, data center or related construction environments, including installation methods and materials.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, scopes of work and customer requirements.
- Comfortable with spreadsheets, estimating tools, PDF/drawing applications and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Industry certifications such as BICSI (or similar).
- Experience working with field personnel, project managers, customers, vendors and partners in a growing, cross-functional organization.
Skills and Attributes
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Able to operate independently while contributing within a growing, cross-functional organization.
Performance Focus
Success in this role means producing estimates that let NetBeam pursue opportunities competitively while giving Operations a reliable financial and operational baseline for successful project execution. Performance is evaluated on timely completion of estimates, estimate quality and accuracy, documentation, handoff effectiveness, collaboration and continued improvement of NetBeam’s estimating capabilities.
