What they need

Company RealVNC is the remote access platform for engineers looking for the most reliable and the most secure solution built by the creators of VNC technology. Over the last 25 years, as the inventors of VNC, we've enabled a global workforce to work wherever works and created the remote access market. Our software is used by hundreds of millions of users worldwide including IT professionals from global companies, such as Intel, IBM, NASA, Shell, DreamWorks and Philips.

Our lead product, VNC Connect, allows users to connect securely to a remote device anywhere in the world, see its screen in real-time, and take control as though sitting in front of it. The product has been deployed across a myriad of use cases, from remote support through to deploying the software onto connected devices such as medical ventilators, set-top boxes, heavy industrial machinery and more.

Backed by leading mid-market private equity firm, Livingbridge since 2021, we are investing in our people to support our highly ambitious growth plans. As part of our people strategy to develop our next generation organisation, we are looking to add new team members that are integral to the success of the business, committed to delivering high quality results, collaboration and innovation to help accelerate company growth.

Position At RealVNC, the Data Engineer combines business analysis with modern data engineering. You will design, build and run the pipelines and data models in Google BigQuery, our company data platform, that the business relies on to understand sales, finance, marketing and product performance.

We are also embracing AI across the business. This role sits at the centre of that: making our data trustworthy and well documented enough for AI assistants and agents to use safely, and using AI tools yourself to build faster and better.

The RealVNC Data Engineer will take a lead in solution development for:

  • The Data Platform: our Google BigQuery warehouse, holding all data on sales, finance, marketing and product engagement, structured in clear, governed layers (raw, cleansed, modelled/reporting).
  • Data ingestion and ELT: loading and transforming data from multiple sources (e.g. Salesforce, SEMRush, Google Analytics/Google Ads, product back-end and finance systems) into BigQuery.
  • Data outputs: feeding reporting and visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI, Looker Studio) and AI assistants that query BigQuery directly.
  • AI-ready data: a well-described semantic layer (clear table and field descriptions, business definitions, certified datasets) so people and AI tools reach the same, correct answer.
  • Stakeholder data provision: providing data from the platform to meet the needs of key stakeholders and departments.

Main responsibilities: Engineering

  • Developing and maintaining business-critical data ingestion, transformation and management pipelines in Google BigQuery and the wider Google Cloud Platform.
  • Building data models in SQL (using tools such as Dataform or dbt), version-controlled in Git, with code review and automated deployment.
  • Integrating with internal and third-party systems through APIs, connectors and scheduled jobs.
  • Running data changes through a clear Dev / Pre-Prod (QA) / Live process, with testing, data quality checks and sign-off before anything reaches production.
  • Automating data governance and data health monitoring (freshness, completeness, reconciliation to source) and acting on issues quickly.
  • Managing BigQuery cost, performance and access (partitioning, clustering, query optimisation, IAM and least-privilege access).
  • Designing procedures for troubleshooting, capacity management and maintenance as the platform scales.

AI and automation

  • Using AI coding and analysis assistants (e.g. Claude, Gemini in BigQuery) day to day to write, review, test and document SQL and Python, while staying accountable for quality and accuracy.
  • Preparing and maintaining data so it can be safely used by AI assistants and agents connected to BigQuery: clear metadata, documented business logic, curated views and appropriate access controls.
  • Building and maintaining reusable AI workflows (e.g. prompts, skills and automated checks) for common data tasks such as sense-checking figures, reconciling reports and specifying new data flows.
  • Exploring and delivering practical AI and machine learning use cases with the business, e.g. forecasting, churn and propensity scoring, customer segmentation and anomaly detection (BigQuery ML or similar).
  • Applying the company's AI and information security policies, keeping customer and personal data protected and only using approved tools and connectors.

Analytics

  • Developing data outputs and semantic models that automate reporting and visualisation.
  • Understanding the data and analytical needs of business stakeholders and analysts, and building a productised, automated data delivery system, so the business has data delivered in a timely and easily understood way.
  • Supporting the business with customer segmentation and clustering to better understand customer cohorts, drivers and trends.
  • Owning the visualisation and self-serve tools from a security, governance and best-practice design/usability perspective.
  • Helping colleagues get reliable answers from data, including through AI assistants, and building data literacy across the business.

Requirements You;

  • Have strong SQL, ideally with hands-on Google BigQuery experience.
  • Have strong knowledge of Python for data engineering and automation (APIs, scripting, data processing).
  • have experience with data modelling and transformation tools (e.g. Dataform, dbt) and version control (Git).
  • Have familiarity with Google Cloud Platform services (e.g. Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions/Run, Scheduler, IAM).
  • Have familiarity with visualisation tools such as Power BI, Looker Studio or Tableau.
  • Are confident, make responsible use of AI tools in your work, and are curious about how AI and machine learning can add value to the business.
  • Have an understanding of data governance, data quality and data protection (including GDPR).
  • Have excellent teamworking and communication skills, able to explain technical topics to non-technical colleagues.
  • Have strong problem-solving skills with good attention to detail; taking ownership of challenges and providing solutions.
  • Have excellent organisational and time management skills, and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time.

Anything else? As well as the above, if you have any of the desired experience below then we'd like to know about it!

  • Have experience of migrating from SQL Server / SSIS to a cloud data platform,
  • have a Google Cloud certification (e.g. Professional Data Engineer), or experience connecting AI assistants or agents to a data warehouse.
