Data Engineer

Role Overview

• We are looking for a Data Engineer with 5+ years of experience to join our healthcare data team.
• You will be responsible for building and maintaining the pipelines that power our clinical analytics and products.
• This role is perfect for a high-performing engineer who is an expert in SQL/Python and is ready to take ownership of complex ETL/ELT workflows while ensuring strict HIPAA/FHIR compliance.

What You'll Do

• Data Engineering & Pipeline Development Build & Scale: Develop high-volume ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest data from EHRs, REST APIs, and flat files into our central data warehouse.
• Advanced SQL: Write and optimize complex transforms using CTEs and window functions; perform query tuning using EXPLAIN/ANALYZE and partitioning strategies.
• Automation: Orchestrate workflows using Apache Airflow, implementing robust retries, error handling, and SLA alerting.
• Code Quality: Write production-grade Python for data validation frameworks and custom ingestion utilities.
• Data Modeling & Architecture Execution Schema Design: Implement and maintain dimensional models (Star/Snowflake) and manage Slowly Changing Dimensions (SCDs).
• Standards: Follow and contribute to team coding standards, documentation, and peer code reviews.
• BI Support: Build and maintain governed semantic layers to support downstream analytics in tools like Tableau or PowerBI.
• Healthcare Interoperability & Compliance Clinical Mapping: Map complex clinical datasets (HL7 FHIR, claims) into curated analytics-ready layers.
• Security: Ensure all data movement adheres to HIPAA guidelines, including encryption-at-rest/in-transit and rigorous access controls.
• Operational Excellence CI/CD: Use GitHub and CI/CD pipelines to deploy data code reliably.
• Observability: Implement data quality checks and lineage tracking to ensure data freshness and accuracy.

What Youll Bring

• Experience: 5+ years in data engineering.
• Experience in the healthcare industry is a significant plus.
• Database Mastery: Heavy hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, MSSQL, or Oracle.
• You should be comfortable managing schemas and optimizing storage/compute.
• Modern Data Stack: Strong proficiency with Apache Airflow and modern ELT patterns.
• Programming: Strong Python skills (pandas/polars, API integrations, packaging) and Unix/Linux shell scripting.
• Modeling: Deep understanding of Kimball/Inmon methodologies and data warehousing fundamentals.
• Compliance Awareness: Familiarity with FHIR/HL7 data structures and a solid understanding of PII/PHI handling.

Soft Skills:

• Ability to mentor junior engineers and communicate technical roadblocks clearly to stakeholders.
• Nice to Have NoSQL/Search: Experience with MongoDB (document modeling) or Elasticsearch (distributed search/indexing).
• Legacy Integration: Familiarity with SSIS, PowerShell, or SSMA for migrating legacy healthcare data.
• Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP data services.
• Privacy: Experience with data de-identification and masking strategies.
