What they need

Data Engineer - GCP / Looker

Sydney / Melbourne | 9-Month Contract | Hybrid

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join a growing data team and play a key role in delivering data solutions that directly support commercial and product requirements.

This is a great opportunity for an engineer who enjoys being close to the business, understands the why behind the data, and wants to have an impact beyond simply delivering tickets.

The initial contract will run for 9 months through to the end of FY27 , with an immediate project need and a target start before or around 19 October 2026 .

What you'll be doing

You’ll work across data engineering, analytics and modelling, helping the team evolve its data capabilities and deliver solutions for a range of business requirements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building and evolving dbt models and data pipelines to support business requirements.
  • Developing and maintaining data models across a modern cloud data environment.
  • Helping evolve Looker models and Explores, where applicable.
  • Working with stakeholders to understand the underlying business problem and translate this into practical data solutions.
  • Contributing to the definition of data engineering and data lifecycle standards.
  • Supporting the development of semantic layers and consistent business metrics.
  • Working alongside analytics, product and engineering teams to deliver trusted, usable data.
  • Contributing to the team's evolving approach to conversational analytics and AI-enabled ways of working.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve the way data is modelled, accessed and consumed.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone with solid mid-level Data Engineering experience who is comfortable working in a modern data environment.

You'll ideally have:

  • Strong hands-on dbt experience.
  • Solid Data Engineering fundamentals, including data modelling and building reliable data pipelines.
  • Experience working with a cloud data warehouse/platform.
  • Strong SQL skills.
  • Experience with one or more modern data platforms such as BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift or Databricks.
  • Experience working with business stakeholders and translating requirements into technical solutions.
  • A pragmatic approach to engineering - you understand when to build something robust and when to keep things simple.

Nice to have

  • Looker experience, particularly LookML and developing Models/Explores.
  • Experience defining a semantic layer or business metrics.
  • Experience with semantic modelling in platforms such as Looker, Power BI or similar.
  • Exposure to conversational analytics or other modern approaches to data consumption.
  • GCP experience.
  • Exposure to AI/LLM-enabled engineering or data workflows.

The type of person we're looking for

This role will suit someone who likes to understand the problem behind the requirement, rather than simply being handed a list of tasks.

You'll be someone who can work with product and commercial stakeholders, ask the right questions and use your technical knowledge to work out the best way to solve a problem.

The team is evolving quickly, so we're particularly interested in engineers who are:

  • Curious and commercially minded.
  • Comfortable operating in an environment where not everything is already defined.
  • Pragmatic rather than overly process-driven.
  • Able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Interested in developing better engineering standards without creating unnecessary complexity.
  • Keen to explore how AI can be incorporated into modern data and analytics workflows.

Why join?

You'll be joining a team that's investing in its data capability and moving towards more modern, AI-enabled ways of working.

Rather than simply maintaining an existing platform, you'll have the opportunity to help shape how data is modelled, governed and consumed, while working closely with product and the wider business.

Other offers great for you!
