What they need

About Company:
Dolphin Insights is a UK-headquartered data and analytics consultancy specialising in hospitality, retail and operational analytics. We build modern data platforms and reporting solutions that help client teams trust their numbers, understand performance and make better decisions.

We are hiring a Data Engineer to join our Karachi team. This role is for someone who can build reliable pipelines and data models, but also understands that production data engineering is about more than moving data from one place to another. The work needs to be accurate, monitored, documented, supportable and built with the end reporting use case in mind.

The role:

You will work on Azure-based data platforms for UK clients, ingesting data from third-party systems, APIs, SFTP files and databases, then transforming it into clean, validated datasets for analytics and Power BI reporting. You will work closely with analysts, senior engineers and UK architecture leads to make sure data is available, correct and fit for business use.

The work is a mix of new build, improvement and support. You may be building a new ingestion pipeline, improving the structure of a silver or gold model, investigating a failed refresh, reconciling numbers against a source file, or documenting a data flow so that the wider team can support it properly.

What you will do:

  • Design, build and maintain data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Databricks, ADLS, Delta Lake and Azure SQL.
  • Ingest data from APIs, SFTP drops, CSV/JSON files, databases and third-party platforms.
  • Build bronze, silver and gold layer datasets that are clean, reliable and easy for analysts to use.
  • Write SQL, Python and PySpark for transformation, modelling, validation and troubleshooting.
  • Create orchestration, monitoring, error handling, retry and backfill processes for production pipelines.
  • Investigate pipeline failures, data quality issues and reconciliation differences, then fix the root cause.
  • Work with Power BI analysts to provide datasets that support accurate, performant reporting.
  • Support daily production refreshes, BAU changes, enhancements and client-critical reporting processes.
  • Document source assumptions, transformation logic, pipeline dependencies and known limitations.

What we are looking for:

  • 3+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, BI engineering or a similar role; 5+ years for a senior version.
  • Strong SQL skills, including joins, transformations, window functions, performance awareness and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience with Python, PySpark or equivalent data engineering tools.
  • Experience building or supporting pipelines in ADF, Databricks, Synapse, Fabric or comparable cloud data platforms.
  • Understanding of data lake concepts, Delta Lake, medallion architecture or layered data modelling.
  • Experience ingesting data from APIs, SFTP, flat files, relational databases or third-party systems.
  • Good understanding of data quality, reconciliation, validation checks and production support.
  • Clear written and spoken English, with the ability to document work and communicate with UK colleagues.
  • A practical engineering mindset: reliable and maintainable beats clever but fragile.

Nice to have:

  • Exposure to Power BI datasets, semantic models or reporting requirements.
  • Hospitality, restaurant, retail, finance, operations, labour or delivery data experience.
  • Git, CI/CD, deployment pipelines, environment management or Azure DevOps experience.
  • API authentication, pagination, incremental load, schema drift and historical backfill experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Logic Apps, Key Vault or wider Azure data services.
  • Interest in using AI tools for development, documentation, testing and troubleshooting.

Who will do well here:

You will enjoy this role if you like building data solutions that people rely on every day. We need someone who cares about accuracy, monitoring, documentation and support, not just getting code to run once. You should be comfortable working with incomplete information, asking sensible questions and thinking through the impact of your work on the reporting layer and business users.

This is a good fit for someone who wants varied project work, exposure to modern Azure platforms, and the chance to grow in a consultancy environment with direct access to senior technical leads.

Practical details:

  • Full-time role based in our Karachi office.
  • Monday to Thursday in the office, Friday working from home.
  • Working hours aligned to the UK working day.
  • Competitive salary, reviewed annually.
  • Direct access to founders, senior consultants and UK architecture leads.
