What they need
Looking for a job to get you out of bed?
We are looking for a passionate, experienced Data Engineer to join Casper’s Data Engineering team as we continue building our data warehouse, data lake and platform capabilities. Our vision is supported by leveraging data and insights to drive the business forward. Data Engineering provides the platform that enables Casper to efficiently produce, manage and consume high quality data.
As an engineer, you will support the evolution of our data platform and analytics capabilities by driving how we process and model new data sets, develop/iterate on internal tooling and infrastructure, and support secure, scalable, and responsible data practices.
Casper (Casper.com) believes everyone should sleep better. That’s why we obsess over designing sleep products that actually make a difference—from the littlest dreamers and beyond. Including mattresses, pillows, and bedding, our entire collection is dreamed up and engineered in-house by our product and design teams. Sleepers can shop online, visit one of our 40+ retail locations across the United States, or find us through a growing network of trusted retail partners.
This is a hybrid role, requiring that you work 4 days per week from our Richmond, VA office.
When you’re not catching zzz’s, this is what you’ll do...
- Own the storage architecture in Amazon Redshift, including distribution and sort key design, RA3/managed storage tuning, and tiering cold data to S3/Spectrum to keep the warehouse fast and cost-efficient as data volume grows
- Design and maintain dbt models for high-volume event data at multi-billion row scale while balancing cost and efficiency.
- Build resilient ingestion pipelines from third-party platforms with idempotent loads so bad or partial loads never silently reach production tables.
- Diagnose and resolve pipeline performance bottlenecks and fine tuning workloads between raw to BI layer to prevent data outages.
- Set up monitoring and alerting across the pipeline to catch data anomalies before they compound.
- Work closely with data analysts to align warehouse design with stakeholder needs and LookML modeling, ensuring a robust, scalable foundation from raw tables through to the semantic layer
- Collaborate with other engineers and product managers in solving interesting and challenging problems across our systems
- Advance modern, agile software development practices and help build a culture of great engineering and organizational practices
- Learn from the team and on your own what you might not know about data infrastructure, business operations, and open source tooling to make you a stronger asset to the team
- Preference for familiarity with Redshift, S3, dbt, Airflow, Looker, Trino, Fivetran
Our dream candidate is/has:
The following technical capabilities developed through at least 3 years of relevant work experience:
Expert in Python and SQL
Experience with Airflow, containerization and orchestration
Experience with a cloud data warehouse like Redshift or Snowflake
Knowledge of modern BI tools and dbt.
Salesforce, GA4, Shopify experience a plus
A proven engineering background with experience developing data workflows and a good operational understanding of data operations, including processing, storage, quality and management
Experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders and helping them understand the trade-offs to different product and technical decisions
Appreciation for the business context that drives the need for data solutions and love working on projects to support those efforts
Experience delivering timely, high quality data products and models
Targeted Annual Base Salary Range: $115,000-130,000 USD
Casper’s compensation philosophy ensures that the actual base salary is based on factors including but not limited to skills, education, experience, special training, time in position, and/or years of service.
We recognize that annual base salary is just one part of a total rewards package. In addition, we offer a comprehensive benefits package, wellbeing resources, and other perks including:
- Medical, vision, and dental insurance to help you with those coughs or cavities (too many waffles)...
- Paid Time Off. We believe in the power of rest so take the time you need to recharge.
- Employee Discount to use on whatever you like (with a few exceptions) and product discounts for friends and family!
- Dreaming of your next degree? After one year of service, we’ll help make that dream a little easier with tuition reimbursement.
- … and more!
If you dream about this stuff this job is probably right for you. We look forward to learning more about you!
Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future employer-sponsored visa support.
As part of our hiring process, employment offers are contingent on the successful completion of a background check and drug screening, where permitted by law.
