Data Governance Analyst (Group Technology)

About the role

The Data Governance Analyst is accountable for designing and implementing data governance frameworks that optimise the integrity, compliance, and value of data assets. The role translates business policies into controls, ensuring Alexforbes’ data management solutions are secure, auditable, and aligned with evolving regulatory requirements, internal standards, and industry best practices. Working with technology and business stakeholders, the role develops, maintains, and enforces data governance standards, ensuring every activity from definition to disposal of data meets regulatory mandates. The role ensures regular assessment of protocols, processes, and procedures, collaborating on drafting new policies to address legal, operational, and technology risks.

Central to the role is ensuring ongoing risk management, with documented strategies for monitoring, reporting, and controlling emerging data-related risks. The role proactively assesses regulatory changes, coordinates timely updates to all governance documentation, and owns the identification, escalation, and remediation responsibilities related to data risk and compliance exposures. A key responsibility includes audit management, wherein the analyst facilitates regulatory reviews, internal audits, and external assessments.

The role supports preparation, documentation, and post-audit action planning, ensuring all findings are incorporated into governance frameworks and staff are informed and supported to remediate any detected gaps.

The role builds comprehensive data quality management programs, defining benchmarks, developing quality monitoring processes, and reporting data health metrics to interested business and technology stakeholders. The role identifies root causes for data anomalies, facilitates intervention by data stewards, and helps embed continuous improvement into every data pipeline and workflow.

Qualifications:

• National Senior Certificate - Matric/Grade 12 or equivalent
• Bachelor’s Degree - Information Technology or related field (3 years - 360 credits)
• Certification - Relevant industry specific DAMA and ISACA training and professional certification would apply to this role.

Experience:

• 3 - 5 years’ experience in data quality management, policy governance updates, risk compliance oversight, audit management support and capability maturity evaluations.

Key Performance Area:

Data quality management

• Develop and enforce data quality programs, set monitoring standards for accuracy and completeness, report integrity metrics to business stakeholders, investigate anomalies, and drive process improvements to deliver reliable, valuable analytics and informed business decisions.

Staff training effectiveness

• Design, deliver, and continuously improve staff training and awareness for governance, compliance, and data handling. Track engagement, effectiveness, and knowledge retention to develop enterprise data culture in alignment with regulatory requirements and business objectives.

Risk compliance proactivity

• Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate data governance risks by developing, monitoring, and updating compliance controls. Partner with legal and risk teams to resolve gaps and ensure accountable performance to GDPR, POPIA, etc., or other regulatory requirements for data management.

Audit management outcomes

• Manage audit readiness and responses, facilitate regulatory/internal/external review cycles, prepare mandated records, track findings, and lead remediation planning, ensuring all corrective improvements are documented, communicated, and embedded into governance protocols and frameworks.

Data standards drafting

• Draft, update, and communicate data standards, policies, and classification protocols for metadata, lineage, definitions, and usage. Ensure standards reflect evolving regulatory, operational, and business requirements, monitor their application, and measure outcome effectiveness for compliance.

Policy governance updates

• Author, review, and maintain data governance policy documentation, ensure all updates are communicated and accessible, track implementation, drive change management, and collaborate with stakeholders to close policy gaps, securing adherence and best-practice data governance outcomes.

Waiver breach management

• Administer waiver, breach, and dispensation management for data governance exceptions. Monitor requests, justification, and approval cycles, report incidents, coordinate remediation, and maintain transparent records of exceptions to support audit, compliance, and ongoing risk reduction efforts.

Maturity assessment execution

• Lead regular capability maturity assessments using DAMA methodology. Evaluate strengths, gaps, and overall progression of governance practices, report findings to stakeholders, and coordinate improvement initiatives to enhance organisational data maturity and governance robustness.

Governance forums leadership

• Facilitate cross-functional forums to align data governance goals, clarify responsibilities, discuss risks, track progress, and escalate decisions. Document actions, monitor follow-up, and ensure transparent stakeholder engagement and performance accountability for forum-deliberated priorities.

Stewardship sessions facilitation

• Create, lead, and track data stewardship working sessions. Set measurable objectives, document actions, enable skills transfer, monitor attendance and results, and ensure stewardship responsibilities are integrated into workflow processes for ongoing enterprise data quality improvement and compliance.

Logical access management

• Oversee assignment and periodic review of data system access, validate data virtualisation controls, audit level changes and removals, ensure compliance to access policies, and promptly revoke unneeded rights to maintain secure, reliable, and compliant enterprise data infrastructure.

Data usage monitoring

• Track, analyse, and report on enterprise data usage, patterns, anomalies, and trends. Provide insights to stakeholders, signal root causes for unexpected spikes or issues, recommend changes to governance controls, and inform investment priorities for robust, secure data infrastructure.
