Data Governance Specialist

Role purpose
The Data Governance Specialist will develop and implement policies, standards, and processes that help the organisation manage data as a trusted business asset. The role works with business and IT teams to improve data quality, clarify ownership, and support secure and compliant use of data.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the data governance framework, policies, standards, and procedures.
• Define data ownership, stewardship roles, decision rights, and governance forums.
• Establish and monitor data quality rules, measures, and improvement plans.
• Coordinate the creation and maintenance of data inventories, business glossaries, metadata, and data dictionaries.
• Support master data management and data lifecycle practices.
• Work with data architects, engineers, security teams, and business stakeholders to embed governance requirements in systems and projects.
• Identify data governance risks and track corrective actions.
• Produce governance reports and provide training and guidance to data owners and stewards.

Minimum requirements

• A relevant IT qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
• DAMA Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) certification.
• At least 5 years’ experience in data management, including practical data governance experience.
• Working knowledge of data quality, metadata management, master data management, data architecture, and data privacy requirements.
• Strong stakeholder engagement, analytical, documentation, and communication skills.

Advantageous experience

• Implementing a data governance framework across multiple business units.
• Working with enterprise data platforms, data catalogues, or data quality tools.
• Leading data stewardship forums or organizational data governance initiatives.
