About the Role

We are seeking a talented Data Scientist / Data Engineer with a passion for cricket to join the CricViz team in London. This role focuses on the hands-on development of proprietary metrics, data pipelines, and predictive models derived from high-frequency cricket tracking data.

In this role, you will bridge the gap between complex data processing and commercial analytics, converting rich tracking datasets into market-leading analytical products. You will combine quantitative modeling and data engineering best practices with a deep, nuanced understanding of the game of cricket to help answer complex performance questions for elite professional clients.

Key Responsibilities

• Metric Development & Data Pipelines: Build and optimize end-to-end data pipelines and algorithms that transform raw ball-tracking and player-tracking data into high-value metrics (e.g., pitch behavior, expected runs/wickets, advanced fielding analysis).
• Data Engineering & Productionisation: Support the scaling and productisation of predictive models and datasets, ensuring reliable integration into internal tools and client workflows.
• Bespoke Client Deliverables: Collaborate with senior team members to deliver custom datasets, niche analytics, and predictive modeling for private clients across professional cricket, media, and gaming.
• Model Validation & Testing: Conduct thorough testing, validation, and optimization of predictive models to maintain high accuracy and data integrity across all operational feeds.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with internal Product, Engineering, and Broadcast teams to ensure raw feeds and derived insights flow seamlessly into production systems.
• Cricket & Betting Applications: Work on sports analytics across media, fantasy, gaming, and sports betting applications. Candidates should be comfortable operating in an environment where betting-related data and modeling form part of the commercial landscape.

Requirements

• Education: Degree in Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
• Practical Experience: ~2 years of hands-on experience developing data pipelines and applying statistical/data science techniques in a professional or production environment.
• Data Science & Engineering Skills:
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL .
• Familiarity with the PyData stack (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, XGBoost, or LightGBM).
• Experience handling, querying, and structuring structured and semi-structured datasets.
• Domain Knowledge: Deep understanding of cricket, match dynamics, and tactical nuances, with the ability to reason about how data models reflect real-game scenarios.

Desirable

• Tracking Data: Exposure to working with high-frequency spatial, GPS, or tracking data.
• Software Practices: Knowledge of modern software tools (Git, CI/CD, Docker, or cloud technologies like AWS/GCP).
• Technical Communication: Ability to explain technical logic and metrics to non-technical stakeholders clearly.
