Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Join Our Data Team: Protecting Pacific Marine Species with Code & Science! Do you want to use your software development and database engineering skills to safeguard endangered Hawaiian monk seals, sea turtles, and cetaceans across the Pacific Islands? Does building offline-first web apps or architecting enterprise database pipelines appeal to you?
The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (CIMAR) at the University of Hawaiʻi, in partnership with the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), is recruiting for three key data team positions based at the NOAA Inouye Regional Center in Honolulu, HI.
- Protected Species Division Database System Developer (E26) The Role: Serve as the technical lead and project manager for our enterprise database infrastructure. You will architect, optimize, and maintain our Oracle-based Enterprise Data Management System (EDMS), establish data governance standards, and lead technical project workflows across multidisciplinary scientific teams. Key Tech: Oracle EDMS, MySQL, SQL/PL-SQL, Python, R, Git/GitHub, Linux/UNIX. Suggested Experience: 5–7 years of professional experience in relational database design/support and scripting, including 1–3 years of project management/technical oversight experience. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field Salary: $6,300-8,000/mo., commensurate with experience
- Protected Species Division Applications Developer (E25) The Role: Lead front-end application development and UI/UX for scientific data tools. You will design, build, and deploy Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) with client-side caching and automated data synchronization workflows. Your apps will empower field biologists and research ships to capture data seamlessly—even in the most remote corners of the Pacific where internet access is spotty . Key Tech: Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), Google AppSheet, JavaScript/HTML/CSS, Python, Oracle APEX, Git/GitHub, SQL. Suggested Experience: 3–5 years of professional programming and relational database application development experience. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field Salary: $5,500-7,000/mo., commensurate with experience
- Protected Species Division Data Science Developer (E25) The Role: Build the reproducible analytical workflows and data products that turn protected-species monitoring data into usable scientific results. You will develop and automate data analysis pipelines, recurring reports, dashboards, and other tools that support population assessments, monitoring programs, and scientific reporting. Working closely with marine biologists and statisticians, you’ll translate established analytical methods into standardized and reproducible workflows—helping make complex scientific analyses more efficient, transparent, and accessible. Key Tech: R, Posit, Quarto, Git/GitHub, Shiny, SQL/relational databases, data visualization and automated analytical pipelines. Suggested Experience: 3–5 years of professional experience in data science, data analytics, programming, or a related field, including developing reproducible analytical workflows and automated data-processing pipelines for scientific applications. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Quantitative Ecology, Marine Science or related field Salary: $5,500-7,000/mo., commensurate with experience
Why Join Us? Your code directly supports NOAA’s population assessment, monitoring, and recovery programs for protected species. Work alongside world-class marine biologists, quantitative ecologists, and software engineers in a modern federal research facility. Opportunities may exist to support shipboard data operations aboard NOAA oceanographic research vessels!
General Requirements Location: Honolulu, HI (NOAA Inouye Regional Center, Ford Island).
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien and able to pass a standard federal background check (U.S. Dept. of Commerce security clearance).
Schedule: Full-time, exempt.
