About the Job

A premier global fintech and digital payment service provider in Japan is seeking a highly skilled Database Engineer (Mid-Level) to support our rapidly expanding offline mobile payment ecosystem.

In this role, you will act as a vital technical liaison between our core infrastructure and application engineering teams, operating with a mindset similar to a Bridge SE or Database Site Reliability Engineer (DB SRE). Rather than focusing on application development, this position is heavily centered on database operations from an infrastructure administrator's perspective. You will drive high-impact initiatives across capacity planning, performance optimization, and database lifecycle maintenance to guarantee the extreme reliability of platforms handling millions of transactions.

What You Will Be Doing

• Conduct database health checks, proactively identify operational bottlenecks, and execute advanced performance tuning including slow query resolution and memory optimization.
• Bridge the gap between infrastructure and application development teams, providing deep technical support for database operations.
• Analyze, coordinate, and promote cross-functional projects related to capacity planning, system maintenance, and performance scaling.
• Audit and manage database environments to eliminate unused users, optimize redundant indexes, and clean environment drift.
• Investigate, test, and perform impact assessments for critical system upgrades, specifically focusing on major MySQL version transitions.
• Review and assess the impact of Data Definition Language (DDL) and schema changes, ensuring high availability before deployment.
• Proactively suggest and implement automated workflows to drive operational improvements and system efficiency.

What We Need To See

• Solid professional experience in the operation, administration, and maintenance of MySQL and MariaDB environments.
• A proven track record of operating databases strictly from an infrastructure administrator's perspective rather than an application development standpoint.
• Practical knowledge of managing databases across on-premise environments as well as cloud-native platforms like AWS Aurora.
• Strong project coordination skills with the ability to lead minor database maintenance initiatives and align different technical teams.

Japanese Language: Native-level proficiency (required for seamless collaboration across local engineering and operational business units).

English Language: Conversational proficiency.
