You will be responsible for database reliability, availability, performance and scalability while developing automation tools to improve operational efficiency and consistency.
Strong production experience with either MongoDB or Cassandra is required. Experience with both platforms will be an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot production MongoDB and Cassandra environments.
- Administer MongoDB replica sets and sharded clusters, including replication, failover, indexing, backup and recovery, upgrades and scaling.
- Administer Cassandra clusters, including replication, consistency levels, compaction, repair, token distribution, node replacement and cluster expansion.
- Investigate database performance and reliability issues, including slow queries, replication lag, hot or large partitions, tombstones, compaction backlog, connectivity issues and resource bottlenecks.
- Perform database patching, upgrades, migrations, configuration changes, capacity planning and routine maintenance.
- Manage backup, restoration and disaster-recovery procedures, including regular recovery testing and validation.
- Monitor database and infrastructure health using Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, CloudWatch or similar tools.
- Support the Linux and cloud infrastructure hosting NoSQL database workloads.
- Respond to production incidents, conduct root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive measures.
- Develop and improve automation for database deployment, monitoring, health checks, backup, recovery, scaling, upgrades and maintenance.
- Build operational tools and scripts using Python, Shell or similar languages.
- Manage database access controls, authentication, TLS certificates and security configurations.
- Collaborate with development and platform teams to improve database capabilities and operational processes.
- Maintain technical documentation, runbooks and operating procedures.
- Participate in a scheduled rotational on-call arrangement and provide production incident support when required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least three years of experience as a DBA, Database Engineer, Production Engineer or in a similar role.
- Strong hands-on production experience administering and troubleshooting either MongoDB or Apache Cassandra.
- Good understanding of distributed NoSQL database concepts, including replication, partitioning, sharding, consistency, quorum, failover and high availability.
- Experience troubleshooting database performance, replication, storage, connectivity and infrastructure resource issues.
- Experience with database upgrades, scaling, migrations, backup and recovery, and capacity planning.
- Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with database monitoring, alerting and production incident response.
- Proficiency in Python, Shell or a similar scripting language.
- Strong automation mindset with the ability to standardise repetitive database operational tasks.
- Good problem-solving, communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Willingness to participate in scheduled on-call support.
Good to Have
- Experience administering both MongoDB and Cassandra in production.
- Experience managing large-scale MongoDB replica sets, sharded clusters and WiredTiger.
- Cassandra experience covering compaction, repair, tombstone management, token distribution and node lifecycle operations.
- Experience diagnosing hot or large partitions, GC pressure, dropped mutations and compaction backlog.
- Experience building database automation platforms, self-service operational tools, internal database management systems or DBaaS platforms.
- Experience with Python APIs, task scheduling, workflow automation or backend service development.
- Familiarity with MongoDB Atlas, Ops Manager, nodetool, JMX, Grafana or Prometheus.
- Experience running NoSQL databases on AWS, Azure or other cloud platforms.
- Familiarity with Terraform, Ansible or other infrastructure automation tools.
- Exposure to multi-region or multi-data-centre high-availability and disaster-recovery architectures.
- Relevant MongoDB, Cassandra, cloud, Linux or database certifications.
Why Join Us?
- Manage business-critical, large-scale NoSQL database environments.
- Gain end-to-end exposure across database operations, cloud infrastructure and automation.
- Build tools and systems that directly improve platform reliability and operational efficiency.
