The role

We're hiring a Database Reliability Engineer to embed with a leading aviation operator and take ownership of the reliability, performance and observability of their database estate.

This is a hands-on, customer-facing engineering role rather than a ticket queue. You'll be the person the customer turns to when performance degrades, when a DR plan needs proving, or when the alerting isn't telling the right story. MongoDB is the primary technology, with MySQL/Percona and PostgreSQL alongside it, all running on AWS and managed through Terraform.

What you'll be doing

• Owning day-to-day reliability and performance across a mixed MongoDB and SQL estate
• Performance tuning: query analysis, indexing strategy, capacity and scaling decisions
• Designing, testing and validating backup, recovery and disaster recovery processes
• Building and improving observability and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, PMM or equivalent)
• Leading incident response and escalation, and driving the follow-up fixes
• Automating infrastructure with Terraform and reducing manual toil
• Working directly with the customer's engineering teams as a trusted technical voice

What we're looking for

• 5+ years in hands-on database administration or reliability engineering
• MongoDB
  • genuine, solid working experience. You don't need to be a MongoDB specialist; a strong working level is what matters here
• SQL
  • hands-on administration across MySQL, Percona or PostgreSQL
• AWS
  • required. Experience with managed database services (RDS/Aurora) is a real plus, general AWS familiarity is fine
• Terraform / IaC
  • required, with real and demonstrable experience
• Solid backup, recovery and DR background
• Monitoring and observability tooling experience
• Strong communication skills
  • this role sits inside the customer's team, so being able to explain, influence and reassure matters as much as the technical depth

Nice to have

• Consulting or other customer-facing experience
• Aviation, aerospace or another safety-critical industry background
• A track record of stability and longevity in previous roles

The customer is open to someone who may need a few weeks of upskilling after starting, provided the core mix - MongoDB, SQL, AWS and Terraform - is genuinely there. If you're a strong all-round DBA/DBRE who doesn't consider themselves an elite MongoDB expert, you are still very much in scope.

This role isn't a fit for Data Engineer, BI Developer or Data Scientist profiles - we need someone hands-on with database operations. Terraform and AWS experience are both essential.
