About the role
We are looking for Data Center Technicians to support the installation, maintenance and operation of IT infrastructure within a hyperscale data center.
You will work with servers, storage systems, network equipment and structured cabling, helping maintain service availability and delivering work safely and accurately. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys troubleshooting, follows procedures carefully and works well in a busy operational environment.
Key responsibilities
- Install, rack, configure and decommission servers, storage systems and network equipment in line with approved procedures.
- Diagnose hardware faults and replace components such as drives, memory, power supplies, fans and system boards.
- Perform break-fix maintenance, preventative checks and hardware upgrades within agreed service levels.
- Install, label, test and troubleshoot copper and fibre cabling, maintaining clear cable management and accurate records.
- Carry out remote hands support for engineering teams, customers and vendors.
- Use ticketing and monitoring systems to prioritise tasks, record work and escalate incidents.
- Support incident response by gathering diagnostic information, completing authorised recovery actions and providing clear shift handovers.
- Follow change management processes, standard operating procedures and approved maintenance plans.
- Maintain accurate asset inventories, rack layouts, equipment records and spare-parts stock.
- Handle equipment securely and follow electrostatic discharge precautions and approved data-bearing device disposal procedures.
- Identify and report environmental, power, cooling or physical security concerns to the appropriate teams.
- Coordinate with network engineers, systems engineers and critical facilities teams during installations and maintenance.
- Maintain a safe, tidy working environment and comply with site safety and security requirements.
Essential skills and experience
- Practical experience in data center operations, IT hardware support, field service or a similar technical role.
- A good understanding of server hardware and a methodical approach to fault diagnosis.
- Familiarity with basic networking concepts, including IP addressing, switches and physical connectivity.
- Experience with structured cabling, including copper and fibre connections.
- Ability to follow technical instructions, document work accurately and recognise when to escalate.
- Strong attention to detail, communication skills and a dependable approach to teamwork.
- Ability to manage competing tasks while maintaining safety and quality standards.
- Willingness to work the advertised shift pattern and participate in on-call support where required.
Desirable skills and experience
- Experience working in a hyperscale, cloud or colocation data center.
- Familiarity with Linux and Windows troubleshooting.
- Experience using data center infrastructure management tools, asset management systems and ticketing platforms.
- Familiarity with remote server management tools, such as iDRAC, iLO or equivalent.
- Relevant technical qualifications or certifications, such as CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+ or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience supporting large-scale deployments, equipment refreshes or decommissioning projects.
Working environment
The role involves working on-site in an operational data center, including periods of standing, walking and handling equipment. Technicians must follow safe lifting practices and use approved handling equipment. Reasonable adjustments will be considered to support candidates in performing the role.
Electrical, power and cooling maintenance is carried out by appropriately qualified and authorised personnel.
