What they need

Primary & Secondary Daytime Tutor

Location: Walsall
Pay: £17.50–£22.50 per hour
Hours: Part-time, typically 6–20 hours per week
Schedule: Monday–Friday, daytime hours
Contract: Self-employed

We are currently recruiting Primary and Secondary tutors in Walsall to support children and young people receiving alternative education provision.

We are looking for reliable, engaging tutors who are available during the school day and can provide consistent face-to-face 1:1 or small-group support.

Learners range from Primary through to GCSE age, with tuition tailored around the individual learner’s academic level, needs and circumstances.

The Role

Tutors may support learners who are currently outside of mainstream education for a variety of reasons, including SEND, SEMH needs, anxiety, school refusal or awaiting a suitable education placement.

Sessions are usually delivered in local libraries, community venues or other agreed educational settings around Walsall.

Depending on your experience and subject knowledge, responsibilities may include:

  • Delivering 1:1 or small-group tuition
  • Supporting Primary Maths and English
  • Supporting Secondary Maths and English
  • Supporting GCSE preparation
  • Supporting Functional Skills where appropriate
  • Developing literacy and numeracy skills
  • Adapting lessons to suit different abilities and learning needs
  • Building positive relationships with learners
  • Supporting confidence, concentration and engagement
  • Providing structured and consistent daytime education
  • Completing a short report after each session
  • Communicating progress or concerns following sessions

Who We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from:

  • Primary teachers
  • Secondary teachers
  • Experienced tutors
  • Teaching assistants
  • Higher-level teaching assistants
  • Cover supervisors
  • Graduates with education or tutoring experience
  • SEND practitioners
  • Alternative Provision practitioners

You do not need to teach both Primary and Secondary. We are happy to hear from tutors who specialise in a particular age group, key stage or subject.

Experience supporting SEND, SEMH or learners outside mainstream education is highly desirable.

Essential Requirements

  • Strong subject knowledge within the age group you wish to support
  • Confidence working with children or young people
  • Reliable weekday daytime availability
  • Ability to travel to face-to-face sessions in Walsall
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
  • Strong communication and safeguarding awareness
  • Ability to commit consistently to agreed weekly sessions

What We Offer

These roles are based around regular, fixed weekly hours, rather than occasional one-off tutoring.

Tutors who perform well and receive positive feedback may be offered additional learners and further hours as new provisions become available.

Support is provided throughout each placement, including learner information, reporting guidance and ongoing communication regarding the provision.

Availability

We are specifically looking for tutors who can work during school hours, Monday to Friday.

When applying, please include:

  • Your current daytime availability
  • Whether you teach Primary, Secondary or both
  • Subjects you can teach
  • Key stages you are comfortable supporting
  • Areas of Walsall you can travel to
  • Your current DBS status
