Job Overview:

This position will focus on migrating data and database functionality from CA IDMS (Integrated Database Management Systems), a hierarchical database management system, to IBM DB2, a relational database management system.

  2. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with IBM DB2, database architecture, data migration, database conversion, and modernization initiatives. The individual should understand the technical challenges involved in transitioning from a legacy hierarchical database environment to a relational database platform and be capable of helping design, implement, validate, and optimize the target DB2 environment.

  3. Given the scale and complexity of the remaining migration work, the client is looking for a skilled professional who can contribute to database conversion activities, resolve technical challenges, improve database performance, and support ongoing modernization efforts.

  4. This is a fast-moving opportunity, and the client is looking to fill the position as soon as possible.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Database Migration: Support the migration of database structures, data, and related functionality from CA IDMS to IBM DB2, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and reliability throughout the conversion process.

  2. Database Architecture and Design: Review existing database structures and help design appropriate DB2 schemas, tables, relationships, indexes, and other database objects to support the target application environment.

  3. Legacy Database Analysis: Analyze existing CA IDMS database structures, hierarchical relationships, data models, and application dependencies to understand how legacy data should be represented in a relational DB2 environment.

  4. Data Mapping and Conversion: Develop and review source-to-target data mappings, conversion rules, transformation logic, and migration procedures to ensure that legacy data is correctly transferred into DB2.

  5. SQL Development and Optimization: Write, review, and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and other database-related code as required to support migration and application functionality.

  6. Database Performance Tuning: Identify and resolve database performance bottlenecks by analyzing SQL execution plans, indexing strategies, query performance, and DB2 configuration settings.

  7. Data Validation and Reconciliation: Perform data integrity checks, record-count comparisons, data reconciliation, and validation testing to ensure that migrated data matches the source system and meets business requirements.

  8. Migration Planning and Execution: Assist with migration strategies, conversion plans, testing procedures, cutover activities, and implementation schedules while minimizing disruption to existing business operations.

  9. Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution: Investigate and resolve technical issues related to database conversion, data inconsistencies, SQL compatibility, database performance, and migration failures.

  10. Application and Database Integration: Work with application developers, database administrators, business analysts, and other technical teams to identify dependencies between legacy applications and the target DB2 environment.

  11. Database Modernization: Recommend improvements to database design, data access patterns, and database architecture to support long-term maintainability, scalability, and performance.

  12. Documentation: Prepare and maintain technical documentation covering existing database structures, migration processes, data mappings, DB2 designs, testing results, and implementation procedures.

  13. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with project managers, architects, developers, QA teams, and other stakeholders to ensure migration activities align with project objectives and technical standards.

Required Technical Skills and Experience:

  • Strong hands-on experience with IBM DB2 database technologies and relational database architecture.
  • Experience supporting database migration, conversion, modernization, or legacy database transformation projects.
  • Understanding of hierarchical database concepts and the challenges involved in migrating legacy database structures to relational databases.
  • Experience with database schema design, data modeling, SQL development, indexing, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to analyze complex legacy database structures and translate them into appropriate relational database designs.
  • Experience with data mapping, transformation, validation, reconciliation, and migration testing.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional technical teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience with CA IDMS database environments.
  • Previous experience migrating from CA IDMS to IBM DB2.
  • Experience with legacy system modernization and enterprise database conversion projects.
  • Familiarity with COBOL applications, mainframe environments, and legacy application dependencies, where applicable.
  • Experience planning database migration testing, production cutovers, and post-migration validation.
  • Knowledge of DB2 performance tuning and database optimization techniques.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

ü The ideal candidate is a technically strong DB2 professional who understands both database architecture and the practical challenges of legacy database migration. Candidates with direct experience in CA IDMS-to-DB2 conversion projects will be particularly relevant.

ü The client is looking for someone who can assess existing database environments, contribute to migration strategy and execution, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and help ensure that the target DB2 environment is reliable, efficient, and maintainable.
