Decision Scientist – Clinical Informatics / Clinical Data Standards
Overview
We are seeking a Decision Scientist to join a Clinical Data Science & AI team focused on leveraging clinical data and analytics to improve healthcare outcomes.
In this role, you will help activate and optimize a large-scale clinical data repository across multiple healthcare use cases. You will serve as a bridge between clinical data assets and the analysts, data scientists, and business partners who consume them, ensuring data is accessible, well-documented, fit for purpose, and aligned with clinical and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Become a subject matter expert in clinical data, including CCD data, with a strong understanding of how to structure and apply clinical data to solve healthcare problems.
- Build and enhance a clinical data feature store, establishing standards, documentation, and best practices that accelerate the use of clinical data for analytics, reporting, and AI/ML applications.
- Develop well-documented, validated, and reusable data assets, including tables, views, and features, that enable analysts and data scientists to work effectively with clinical data.
- Create and maintain comprehensive data documentation, including data dictionaries, lineage, business logic, known limitations, and appropriate-use guidelines.
- Build queries, dashboards, and data visualizations to communicate data quality, availability, and clinical insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Translate clinical concepts into analytical frameworks and help business partners understand the capabilities and limitations of available clinical data.
- Collaborate with data engineering teams to support data pipeline development and ensure clinical data is ingested, transformed, and stored appropriately for downstream analytics.
- Support data governance practices, including HIPAA compliance, data privacy, security, and data stewardship.
- Stay current with clinical data and interoperability standards, including HL7, FHIR, ICD-10, SNOMED-CT, LOINC, CPT, NDC, and RxNorm.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in clinical informatics, healthcare analytics, clinical data management, or a related area.
- Familiarity with clinical data types and structures, including CCD data, lab results, clinical notes, and administrative healthcare data.
- Knowledge of clinical coding systems and terminologies such as ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, SNOMED-CT, LOINC, NDC, and RxNorm.
- Experience supporting analysts, data scientists, and business users through documentation, training, and consultative support.
- Strong SQL skills and experience working with large-scale healthcare datasets.
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms, preferably GCP and BigQuery, for querying, transforming, and managing data.
- Understanding of healthcare data quality principles, including validation, profiling, and monitoring.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex clinical data concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Healthcare data platform experience with a strong understanding of interoperability standards and data harmonization at scale, including OMOP, CCDA, and FHIR.
- Familiarity with clinical workflows and Health Information Exchanges (HIEs).
- Experience working with standardized clinical coding systems such as ICD-10, SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, and UMLS within common data models such as OMOP.
- Experience designing and implementing ETL processes that transform heterogeneous clinical data sources into standardized data models, preferably OMOP CDM.
- Experience designing and implementing healthcare data quality frameworks, including tools such as Achilles, Data Quality Dashboard (DQDB), or comparable frameworks.
- Understanding of healthcare privacy, security, and compliance, including HIPAA/HITRUST, PHI handling, de-identification/tokenization, and data access controls.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Informatics, Public Health, Nursing, Health Information Management, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative or clinical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Master’s degree or higher in Health Informatics, Biomedical Informatics, Clinical Informatics, Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related field is strongly preferred.
- Clinical background such as RN, PharmD, MD, or similar, with a transition into informatics or analytics, is highly valued.
