What they need
DECONSTRUCTION MANAGER
ReUse Systems, Inc. — Geneva, NY
Half-Time Position | $35,000–$38,000 + benefits
Help keep valuable materials out of the landfill. Build something new from what
already exists. ReUse Systems, Inc. (RSI) is a growing nonprofit creating a stronger local circular economy by keeping useful materials in circulation and out of landfills. We are looking for a hands-on Deconstruction Manager to help launch and build RSI's deconstruction program. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys construction, salvage and problem-solving, can lead a crew, and wants to help create a new model for recovering valuable building materials.
THE POSITION
The Deconstruction Manager will oversee selected deconstruction projects from initial assessment through completion while helping RSI establish the systems, relationships and practices needed to grow the program. Because this is a half-time position (20-25 hours per week), the emphasis will be on the highest-priority projects and activities. The Manager will work closely with the Operations Manager and RSI board to determine project priorities, schedules and resources.
Key Responsibilities
Project Development & Assessment
Build relationships with homeowners, builders, contractors, developers, businesses and community organizations to identify potential deconstruction projects.
Assess prospective projects for feasibility, salvage potential, labor and equipment needs.
Prepare project estimates, budgets and proposals in coordination with the Operations Manager.
Project Management
Plan and manage selected deconstruction projects, including scheduling, site logistics, permits and subcontractors as needed.
Lead crews and volunteers in the safe and efficient removal of reusable building materials.
Work hands-on at project sites to ensure quality work and maximize the amount and value of materials recovered.
Coordinate transportation and delivery of salvaged materials to RSI's warehouse or other designated locations.
Program Development
Help establish RSI's deconstruction procedures, safety practices and operations handbook.
Develop practical systems for documenting projects, materials recovered, salvage value and landfill diversion.
Help identify opportunities to improve efficiency, expand services and increase the value of recovered materials.
Work collaboratively with the Operations Manager, staff, Board, community partners and volunteers.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The ideal candidate has experience as a construction professional who is comfortable managing projects, leading people and getting their hands dirty.
At least two years of hands-on construction and/or deconstruction experience; supervisory or crew-lead experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of construction tools, materials and methods.
Experience evaluating material quality, salvage value and reuse potential.
Strong organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to build positive relationships with property owners, contractors and community partners.
Commitment to safety, integrity and excellent customer service.
Ability to work independently and manage priorities within a part-time schedule.
Experience managing volunteers, or experience with nonprofit or reuse organizations is a plus.
THE WORK
This is a hands-on position, with time divided between project sites, planning and coordination. The schedule will be flexible and may vary depending on project needs. Work may involve bending, lifting, squatting and repetitive motion. The ability to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions is required.
WHY RSI?
This is more than a construction job. You'll help build a new local model for reuse, resource recovery and landfill diversion while developing a growing program with meaningful environmental and community impact.
If you are an experienced construction professional who enjoys salvaging, problem-solving and finding value in things others might throw away, we'd like to hear from you.
