Job descriptions & requirements

Company Description NextGem Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on helping children in institutional care in Nigeria successfully transition into independent, productive adulthood. The foundation builds systems that connect young people in orphanages to education, practical skills, supportive relationships, and meaningful opportunities. Its work is organized into three structured programs: Spotlight, which offers talent and sports competitions; Support, which provides education and welfare funding; and Refiners, which coordinates weekly volunteer placements. NextGem collaborates with partners and volunteers who are committed to improving long-term outcomes for children growing up in orphanages.

Role Description The Pig Farmer at NextGem Foundation is a full-time, on-site role based in Lagos State, Nigeria. The role involves daily care and monitoring of pigs, including feeding, watering, cleaning pens, and checking for signs of illness or injury. The Pig Farmer will implement basic animal health practices, follow biosecurity and hygiene protocols, and maintain accurate records of breeding, growth, and health. Responsibilities also include managing feed and supplies, assisting with breeding and farrowing, supporting farm maintenance and repairs, and collaborating with the team to ensure that the farm contributes to NextGem’s broader mission of providing skills and livelihood opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Practical pig farming skills, including daily animal care, feeding, and pen management.
  • Basic animal health and welfare knowledge, including disease prevention, sanitation, and biosecurity practices.
  • Experience with farm operations such as record-keeping, inventory management, and simple equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, work safely with animals, and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Strong reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn and follow guidance from farm supervisors.
  • Prior experience in livestock farming or agriculture is highly beneficial; vocational training in animal husbandry is an advantage.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for reading instructions and maintaining simple records.
  • Commitment to NextGem Foundation’s mission and readiness to model positive work habits for young people engaged in skills programs.
