Design Engineer

About the role

Pro-Fab is a 25-person precision fabrication and machining job shop in Bosque Farms, NM. We build high-mix, low-volume parts and assemblies for defense, national lab, pharmaceutical, and aerospace customers. Every job is different, and the work has to be right the first time.

You'll join a small design engineering team that sits between engineering and estimating. Most of your week is in SolidWorks: designing and detailing parts, weldments, fixtures, and tooling from concept to production print. The rest is helping customers turn their designs into something we can build well, and reviewing job packets before they hit the floor.

What you'll do

In-house design (most of your week)

• Design and detail parts, weldments, and assemblies in SolidWorks, concept to production print
• Design fixtures, tooling, and weld jigs for the shop
• Model customer 2D prints into 3D for CAM programming and nesting
• Produce complete drawing packages: GD&T, flat patterns, BOMs, and revision control

Customer design support

• Review customer-supplied designs for manufacturability and recommend changes that cut cost, lead time, or risk
• Work directly with customer engineers to resolve tolerance, material, and process questions
• Turn customer sketches, RFQs, and concepts into buildable designs

Packet review for manufacturing

• Review job packets before release to the floor: prints, revisions, material, finish, and process notes complete and correct
• Catch missing or conflicting information before it turns into scrap or rework
• Give estimating design input on quotes when they need it

Must-haves

• 3–7 years of design or drafting experience in a machining or fabrication environment
• Strong SolidWorks skills: parts, assemblies, drawings, sheet metal
• U.S. person (citizen or permanent resident), required for ITAR-controlled work
• Comfortable on the shop floor working through problems with machinists and welders

Nice to have

• BS in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience
• DFM experience in sheet metal and machining
• GD&T fluency (ASME Y14.5)
• CAM or nesting software experience
• PLC programming experience

Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
