Join Chieftain
Chieftain is a renowned trailer manufacturer with a long-standing reputation for the design and manufacture of high-quality trailers for the agricultural, commercial, fuel, forestry and rail sectors.
As we continue to grow and develop our product range, we are looking to strengthen our Design & Engineering team.
We are interested in hearing from engineers at all levels of experience, from recent graduates and junior engineers beginning their careers to experienced and senior design engineers.
The level of responsibility, project ownership and salary will be tailored to the successful applicant's experience and capabilities.
The Role
This is a hands-on engineering role offering the opportunity to work across the full product development process, from initial concept and 3D design using SolidWorks through to fabrication, assembly, testing and production.
You will work closely with our Production and Fabrication teams to develop practical engineering solutions across our trailer range.
For a graduate or junior engineer, the role offers the opportunity to develop practical design and manufacturing experience while working alongside experienced engineers and production teams.
For an experienced or senior engineer, the role will provide greater responsibility for product development, engineering projects, technical decisions and the continuous improvement of our existing product range.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on experience, responsibilities may include:
- Designing and developing trailers and new product concepts.
- Producing accurate 3D CAD models, assemblies and detailed manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
- Preparing and maintaining accurate Bills of Materials.
- Developing products from concept through prototype and production.
- Working closely with Production and Fabrication teams to ensure designs are practical and suitable for manufacture.
- Reviewing existing products and identifying opportunities to improve performance, reliability, weight, cost and manufacturability.
- Carrying out engineering calculations where required.
- Assisting with prototype builds, product testing and design validation.
- Maintaining engineering drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
- Managing engineering changes and ensuring drawings and BOMs remain accurate.
- Supporting new product development and R&D projects.
- Ensuring designs meet relevant safety and legislative requirements.
Who We're Looking For
We welcome applications from candidates at different stages of their engineering career.
Graduate / Entry Level
You may be a recent graduate or soon-to-graduate engineer looking to begin your career in design and manufacturing.
Ideally, you will have:
- A degree, HND, HNC or equivalent engineering qualification, or relevant practical industry experience.
- Experience using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software through university, placement or employment.
- A good understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
- An interest in manufacturing, machinery and product design.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
- A practical and enthusiastic approach to engineering.
Previous industry experience is not essential for the right graduate candidate.
Junior Design Engineer
You may already have some experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment and be looking to develop your design career further.
Ideally, you will have:
- Experience using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software in an engineering environment.
- Experience producing manufacturing drawings.
- An understanding of fabrication and manufacturing processes.
- Experience working with Bills of Materials.
- Good mechanical design and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work closely with production teams.
Experienced / Senior Design Engineer
We are also keen to hear from experienced engineers who can take greater ownership of engineering and product development projects.
Experience may include:
- Managing designs from initial concept through to production.
- New product development.
- Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks.
- Heavy engineering, trailers, agricultural machinery or mobile equipment.
- Fabricated and welded steel structures.
- Sheet metal design.
- Engineering calculations.
- Design for manufacture and assembly.
- Prototype development and product testing.
What We're Looking For
Whatever your level of experience, we are looking for someone who enjoys practical engineering and developing real products.
You should have an interest in seeing how your designs move from a SolidWorks model to the factory floor and ultimately become a finished trailer.
You will be someone who:
- Takes pride in producing accurate engineering work.
- Enjoys solving practical problems.
- Works well with both engineering and production teams.
- Is interested in continually improving products and manufacturing processes.
- Can combine good engineering principles with a practical approach to manufacture.
Why Join Chieftain?
At Chieftain, our engineers have the opportunity to see their work become a physical product.
You will be involved throughout the engineering process, from design and development through fabrication, assembly, testing and production.
With a broad and diverse product range serving the agricultural, commercial, fuel, forestry and rail sectors, the role offers considerable variety and the opportunity to build strong practical engineering experience.
Whether you are starting your engineering career or bringing years of industry experience, we are interested in hearing what you could bring to the Chieftain engineering team.
