Position Overview
We are looking for a Design Manager to lead and manage Design & Engineering execution for offsite manufacturing products and complex construction initiatives. The Design Manager will coordinate multidisciplinary teams and ensure the delivery of high-quality, constructible, fabrication-ready, and installation-supported design packages.
This position will act as the primary interface for Design & Engineering, managing scope, schedules, priorities, deliverables, design decisions, risks, changes, approvals, and handoffs from project intake through design release, manufacturing, fabrication, and field installation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Design & Engineering execution across architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, prefabrication, manufacturing, and installation disciplines.
- Serve as the primary coordination point between D&E teams, consultants, engineers, manufacturing, procurement, operations, and construction stakeholders.
- Develop and manage design schedules, budgets, resource plans, milestones, and deliverables.
- Coordinate design intent with manufacturability, constructability, Lean principles, and prefabrication best practices.
- Oversee the development and review of BIM models, technical drawings, specifications, shop drawings, fabrication documentation, BOMs, and assembly drawings.
- Ensure OSM design packages meet applicable codes, standards, specifications, quality requirements, and contractual obligations.
- Lead design reviews, constructability reviews, value engineering, clash detection, and coordination activities.
- Maintain the D&E deliverables tracker, including models, submittals, approvals, fabrication packages, open issues, release milestones, and lessons learned.
- Identify and manage design risks, changes, scope issues, and project dependencies.
- Conduct regular progress meetings and communicate project status, KPIs, risks, and critical decisions to leadership.
- Promote consistent use of BIM, Revit, AutoCAD, and other digital design/modeling technologies.
- Manage design quality and coordinate efforts to identify and eliminate model clashes and constructability issues before production.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and production teams to ensure designs are fabrication-ready and optimized for offsite production.
- Support seamless transition from design → engineering → procurement → manufacturing → fabrication → field installation.
- Review and contribute to proposals, estimates, scopes of work, and contract documents related to design activities.
- Support team development, recruiting, knowledge sharing, execution best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and incorporate lessons learned into future design and manufacturing processes.
- Travel approximately 15–20% to manufacturing facilities, project sites, vendor locations, and other project-related locations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive experience in design project management, engineering execution, construction, prefabrication, modular/offsite manufacturing, design-build, AEC, or related industries.
- Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary design/engineering teams and complex concurrent projects.
- Strong understanding of BIM processes, Revit, AutoCAD, design coordination, constructability, and technical documentation.
- Experience managing schedules, budgets, resources, deliverables, risks, changes, and project priorities.
- Strong understanding of building codes, OSHA/safety requirements, quality standards, and Lean design/manufacturing principles.
- Experience taking designs through design development, approval, production release, fabrication, and installation support.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in offsite construction, modular construction, prefabrication, industrialized construction, or engineered products.
- Experience within data centers, industrial facilities, power/energy, manufacturing, aerospace, or automotive environments.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems, prefabrication software, BOM management, or manufacturing workflows.
- Experience with advanced BIM/model coordination and clash detection tools.
- Professional certification/licensure such as PE, RA, PMP, or LEED is preferred.
- Experience with value engineering, Lean manufacturing, DfMA/Design for Manufacturing & Assembly, and continuous improvement is a plus.
