What they need
Why join us? With Titon you will :
- See your designs go into production in our Haverhill factory and into homes across the UK.
- Work across the whole product, from concept to launch, not just one small part of it.
- Join a small, practical team where your ideas are heard and acted on.
- Help grow a business that is investing in new products as building standards push for more energy-efficient, better-ventilated homes.
About the role
Titon is looking for a Development Engineer to join our Research & Development team. This role focusses on designing new and improved products for Titon’s Mechanical Ventilation business, which makes ventilation systems for homes: heat recovery units, extract fans and their controls, and fire-safe airbricks. Based in Haverhill, Suffolk, you will take products from first concept in CAD, through prototyping and testing, to production in our own factory, following Titon’s Product Development Process.
This is a hands-on design role. Most of your time will be spent in 3D CAD, designing injection-moulded and sheet metal parts, and working out how fans, circuit boards, sensors and wiring fit together in a product that performs well, is efficient to make and is easy to install. Our plastic parts are moulded in-house, so you will work closely with the people who make them, as well as with our own electronics and firmware engineers and our external toolmakers. For a full job description, email [email protected]
Key Responsibilities
- Create 3D CAD models, assemblies and production drawings using Autodesk Inventor.
- Design injection-moulded plastic and sheet metal components, working closely with our manufacturing teams and external suppliers.
- Work with electronics and firmware engineers to integrate PCBs, wiring, sensors and controls into products.
- Design products that are cost-effective, easy to manufacture and assemble, and meet quality and performance requirements.
- Build and test prototypes, support product testing and contribute to design reviews.
- Manage engineering changes, keeping drawings, specifications and technical documentation up to date.
- Take ownership of your design tasks, delivering new products and improvements to existing products on time, to cost and quality targets.
Key challenges of the role:
Getting good airflow, low noise and high energy efficiency out of compact units, at a price customers will pay.
Designing moulded parts that work first time. Tool changes are expensive and slow, so the thinking has to happen in CAD, not after the tool is cut.
Fitting electronics, wiring and wireless connectivity into plastic enclosures without compromising performance, safety, servicing or compliance.
Balancing a good design against what is quickest to assemble in the factory and to install on site.
Keeping your design work on schedule while working across several projects and teams.
What You’ll Bring (Essential)
· Strong 3D CAD skills, including large assemblies and production drawings. Autodesk Inventor preferred; similar experience is welcome.
· Proven experience designing injection-moulded plastic parts that have gone into production.
· Experience designing sheet metal or fabricated parts.
· Good working knowledge of design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA).
· Has taken at least one product, or a major part of one, from concept through to production.
· Typically 3 or more years’ product design experience in a manufacturing business.
· Degree, HND or equivalent in mechanical, product design or manufacturing engineering.
· Takes ownership of tasks and sees them through, and can explain design decisions clearly to non-engineers.
Desirable Skills
· Experience integrating electronics into products (PCB enclosures, wiring, heat management, IP ratings, awareness of EMC).
· Knowledge of fans, airflow, HVAC or mechanical ventilation products.
· Tolerance analysis and GD&T.
· FEA or CFD.
· Rapid prototyping, including 3D printing.
· Experience of PLM and ERP systems (we use Microsoft Dynamics 365).
Knowledge of ventilation product standards and Building Regulations (e.g. Part F).
