What they need

About the role

We’re looking for a hands-on DevOps engineer to make the infrastructure behind Aztec reliable, secure, and easy to work with. You’ll build and maintain the systems our engineers use to develop, test, release, and operate software, with a focus on automation, operational reliability, and practical security.

You’ll work closely with engineering to improve build and deployment workflows, remove recurring operational friction, and protect the infrastructure and tooling they depend on. This is a role for someone who enjoys understanding how systems fit together, troubleshooting difficult problems, and turning manual processes into maintainable automation.

We welcome backgrounds in DevOps, platform engineering, software engineering, site reliability, systems engineering, and infrastructure security. Experience with software development is required. Prior experience with Aztec, blockchain, or cryptography is not required.

What you’ll do

  • Build and maintain infrastructure. Manage cloud resources, Linux systems, containers, and shared engineering services using infrastructure as code. Improve reliability, capacity, and cost efficiency while keeping environments consistent and maintainable.
  • Own build, CI/CD, and release workflows. Maintain and improve build and test pipelines, dependency and artifact caching, packaging, and release automation. Reduce build times, investigate unreliable jobs, and make releases repeatable, traceable, and easier to troubleshoot.
  • Strengthen operational security. Manage and improve access controls, service identities, secrets, and credentials across engineering infrastructure and tooling. Apply least-privilege access, maintain secure configurations, and own credential and access provisioning, rotation, review, and removal. Identify operational security risks and improve the systems and processes used to prevent, detect, and respond to them.
  • Secure the software delivery process. Improve safeguards around build environments, dependencies, container images, artifact publishing, and deployment permissions. Address infrastructure vulnerabilities and coordinate remediation with the relevant engineering owners.
  • Improve observability and incident readiness. Develop useful monitoring, logging, dashboards, and alerts. Troubleshoot infrastructure and deployment incidents, maintain runbooks, test recovery procedures, and follow through on improvements that prevent recurring failures. Coordinate incident response for CI, build and release infrastructure, AWS resources, shared engineering services, credentials, and other systems within the role’s remit.
  • Make engineering workflows easier. Maintain reproducible development environments and self-service tooling. Automate repetitive tasks, document common workflows, and help engineers use infrastructure and development tools safely and effectively.
  • Automate repository workflows. Build and maintain automation for recurring Git and GitHub workflows across our repositories, including automated merging, backporting, forward-porting, branch synchronization, repository mirroring, dependency propagation, and related cross-repository maintenance.
  • Improve our AI development and auditing harness. We must ensure the Aztec network is as secure as possible, and AI is proving invaluable. Help improve the infrastructure and tooling through which engineers and automated agents use AI in development and auditing workflows, including the reliability, capabilities, integrations, execution environment, permissions, observability, and developer experience.

What you’ll bring

  • Hands-on infrastructure experience. A track record of building, operating, and improving systems in a DevOps, platform, site reliability, systems engineering, or similar role.
  • Strong Linux and networking fundamentals. Confidence diagnosing problems involving processes, storage, resource usage, DNS, TLS, and connectivity.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and automation. Practical knowledge of a major cloud platform, containers, CI/CD systems, and infrastructure-as-code tools. Depth in one environment and the ability to learn another matter more than knowing every tool.
  • Strong software engineering skills. Strong shell scripting skills and experience with a language such as TypeScript, Rust, or C++. You should be comfortable maintaining automation and developer tooling, as well as improving existing systems and code.
  • Practical security skills. Experience with identity and access management, secrets handling, system hardening, CI security, software supply-chain security, patching, and secure operational practices. You can make sensible trade-offs between security, reliability, and usability.
  • A collaborative approach to problem-solving. You use logs, metrics, and systematic investigation to understand failures, communicate clearly with engineers, and leave behind documentation and fixes that others can maintain.

Relevant Experience

Experience in any of the following would be particularly useful, but we don't expect candidates to have worked with all of them.

  • Experience with AWS, Terraform, GitHub Actions.
  • Experience building GitHub Apps, bots, or other repository and workflow automation.
  • Experience supporting large, multi-repository projects, multi-language builds, package registries, or open-source release processes.
  • Experience with AI harnesses for software development, review, and auditing.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems, blockchain infrastructure, or software supply-chain security.

What success looks like

Engineers can build, test, and release software with less manual intervention and fewer environment-related failures. Infrastructure changes are repeatable and reviewable, access and credentials are well managed, and operational and security problems are easier to detect, diagnose, and recover from. Our AI tooling is secure and meaningfully improves our ability to develop software, perform automated audits and detect and fix security issues.
