DevOps / Site Reliability Engineer, Quantum Computing - Japan based

• Build the operational platform for a quantum computer from nothing, on the infrastructure and reliability side
• Deep tech, quantum computing hardware
• Kyoto, Japan, on site (no remote). Up to ¥15,000,000 (approx. €88,000)

Our client builds quantum computers, the machines themselves, sold into research institutions and government programmes. They are venture backed with significant public funding behind them and they are working to a fixed date for a working prototype, not open-ended research.

This role is on-site in Kyoto, Japan with no remote option, because the person needs to be near the hardware.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and build CI/CD pipelines for a live experimental system
• Build and own monitoring and observability across metrics, logs and alerting
• Lead reliability improvements on a system that cannot go down
• Write the operational tooling in Python or equivalent, rather than relying on off the shelf tools alone
• Manage Linux infrastructure end to end
• Build automated test rigs against hardware
• Monitor physical environment conditions such as temperature, humidity and vibration alongside software metrics
• Apply Infrastructure as Code to keep the environment reproducible
• Learn and adapt into an unfamiliar scientific domain independently
• Build the platform from zero and set the standards as you go

About You

• Five years or more hands-on experience in SRE, DevOps or systems engineering
• Experience within a research or experimental environment, such as a laboratory, an instrument or a scientific facility, combined with production DevOps work
• Has led reliability improvement in a live production environment
• Comfortable writing Python or equivalent to build your own tooling
• Deep, hands-on Linux experience
• Business-level English for an international team
• Willing to relocate and work on site, since this role cannot be done remotely
• Japanese language ability is an advantage but not a requirement
