Diagnostic Technician

Experienced Automotive Diagnostic Technician

Magallanes Automotive Repair – Richmond, CA
Full-Time | Competitive Pay Based on Experience

Magallanes Automotive Repair is looking for an experienced Automotive Diagnostic Technician. We already have technicians who are capable of removing and replacing components. We are specifically looking for someone who can diagnose the vehicle correctly, determine the actual root cause, and fix it right the first time.

Our shop works on a very wide range of vehicles, from early-1980s vehicles through current mid-2020s models. Because of this, we see everything from older electrical, fuel, ignition, vacuum, and drivability problems to modern CAN-bus, module, sensor, network, and electronic issues.

What we're looking for

• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting experience
• Ability to diagnose check-engine lights, no-starts, misfires, electrical problems, drivability concerns, charging/starting systems, communication faults, and intermittent issues
• Comfortable diagnosing older vehicles, not just reading codes and replacing parts
• Able to use scan data, wiring diagrams, DVOMs, test equipment, and other diagnostic methods to verify failures
• Understands that a trouble code is a starting point for diagnosis, not automatically the failed component
• Ability to work on a wide variety of domestic, Asian, and European vehicles
• Must have your own professional tools
• Able to work independently without needing another technician to determine the next diagnostic step
• Strong attention to detail and ability to document findings clearly
• Must take pride in accurate diagnosis and minimizing comebacks and misdiagnosed repairs
• Professional, dependable, and able to communicate with service advisors and management

This position is NOT just R&R

We're not looking for someone whose main strength is replacing whatever part is listed on the repair order. We need a technician who can be handed a vehicle with a difficult problem and figure out why it's happening.

If a 1987 vehicle comes in with an intermittent no-start, you need to be comfortable diagnosing it. If a 2023 vehicle comes in with multiple modules setting communication faults, you need to know how to approach that too.

We understand that difficult diagnostics take time. We would rather have the vehicle diagnosed correctly than have parts thrown at it and the customer return with the same problem.

Compensation

We are willing to pay the right money for the right technician.

Compensation will be based on actual diagnostic ability, experience, productivity, certifications, and overall skill level. If you're a genuinely experienced diagnostic technician who can solve problems other technicians struggle with, we are willing to structure competitive compensation around your experience.
