Digital Painter / Character Illustrator

About the role

We're looking for a digital painter and illustrator to join our team and work on original characters, illustrated stories and IP projects. You should have very solid drawing skills and be comfortable drawing characters from different angles and in different poses, rather than only being able to draw a character from one familiar view. If given an existing character, you should be able to understand the design quickly and draw the same character sitting, running, turning around, interacting with objects or other characters, and from different perspectives — while still making it clearly feel like the same character.

About you

• Good drawing fundamentals with understanding of form, anatomy, perspective, volume and space
• Ability to construct and understand what you are drawing, rather than relying too heavily on one particular angle or style
• Good natural sense of colour and knowledge of which colours work together and how to use colour to create a particular feeling
• Understanding of light and shadow, and ability to use lighting to give an image depth, atmosphere and focus
• Ability to design an image and think about composition: what should be the focus, where the character should be placed, how much background is needed, how the lighting should work, and how the whole image can feel balanced and interesting
• Natural ability to come up with ideas and contribute to storytelling
• Ability to imagine situations characters might get into, how they would interact with another character, or small stories that could happen in their world
• Ability to contribute ideas, not only wait for a finished story and then illustrate it
• Rich, painterly digital painting style with good use of colour, light, texture and atmosphere
• Portfolio demonstrating the same character drawn from multiple angles, characters in different poses and actions, character interactions, original character designs, finished digital paintings, work showing good colour and lighting, full compositions with characters and environments, and narrative illustrations or sequences that tell a story
