Help Someone Build Independence, Confidence, and Connection

Voices of Serenity, LLC is seeking a dependable, compassionate, and engaging Direct Support Professional (DSP) to support an adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Western Branch area of Chesapeake, Virginia.

This position involves active, hands-on support throughout the community. You will help the individual participate in meaningful activities, explore personal interests, strengthen everyday skills, and build relationships—all while respecting their choices, dignity, and goals.

We are looking for someone who brings patience, initiative, and positive energy to their work. Consistent attendance and availability for the full Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. schedule are essential.

What You Will Do

  • Provide person-centered support based on the individual’s service plan, preferences, goals, and support needs.
  • Help plan and participate in meaningful community outings, volunteer opportunities, recreational activities, and social experiences.
  • Teach and reinforce communication, decision-making, personal safety, social, and independent-living skills.
  • Encourage choice, self-advocacy, and independence while providing the appropriate level of assistance.
  • Transport the individual safely using your reliable, properly insured personal vehicle.
  • Provide personal-care assistance as needed while protecting privacy and dignity.
  • Recognize and promptly report changes in health, behavior, mood, or support needs.
  • Complete accurate, timely electronic service notes, progress documentation, transportation records, and other required paperwork.
  • Follow company procedures for health and safety, human rights, confidentiality, and emergency response.
  • Communicate professionally with the individual, family members, supervisors, and the support team.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and respectful, supportive relationships.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Be available to work Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
  • Be able to report reliably to the Western Branch area of Chesapeake.
  • Have a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and current automobile insurance.
  • Have a safe, reliable, properly maintained personal vehicle and be willing to transport the individual throughout the local community and Hampton Roads as needed.
  • Successfully complete required criminal background checks, the Virginia Department of Social Services Central Registry search, and other applicable employment screenings.
  • Meet applicable Virginia employment eligibility requirements, including barrier-crime restrictions.
  • Complete required orientation, training, and competency evaluations.
  • Communicate clearly and use electronic systems to complete documentation.
  • Work independently, follow the service plan, and respond calmly to changing situations.
  • Be able to perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Experience and Certifications

  • At least one year of experience supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
  • Experience in community engagement, direct care, residential services, day support, behavioral health, personal care, education, or a related field.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification; training may be provided.
  • Medication administration training or certification.
  • Relevant DBHDS or developmental-disability training.

Experience is valued, but we also welcome applicants who are responsible, receptive to training, and committed to respectful, person-centered support.

Who Will Thrive in This Role?

You may be a great fit if you follow through on commitments, notice opportunities to build skills during everyday activities, and understand when to offer assistance and when to give someone room to try.

You should be comfortable staying actively engaged throughout the day, adapting activities to the individual’s interests and needs, and completing documentation as an essential part of quality service.
