Direct Support Professional

An adult artist with developmental disability is seeking a Direct Support Professional to support him in Activities of Daily Living, Life Skills, and appointments and classes in the community. Looking for motivated self-starters who are dedicated, dependable, reliable, patient, and can work independently. This is a part-time position, ranging from 20 - 30 hours weekly.

Key Responsibilities:

• Helping person increase life skills, such as cleaning, cooking, food-shopping
• Assist person in following an appropriate personal hygiene routine to foster social inclusion and good health
• Drive person to and from classes and appointments in the community
• Support person at the art studio with interpersonal skills with other artists
• Teaching person skills to interact safely and effectively with people in the community
• Providing person with travel training practice
• Accompany person on various types of physical fitness activities, including the gym, rec center, the pool, and hiking.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Work collaboratively with team members and Behavior Support Specialist to implement the behavior support plan
• Using techniques from the behavior plan, help person make positive and safe choices thus promoting increased independence and personal growth
• Partner with person's job coach and other members of his team to best support him in all areas of his life

Qualifications:

• Experience teaching job skills to people with developmental disabilities
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Flexibility, patience and a sense of humor
• Ability to manage challenging behaviors with appropriate redirection
• Must be certified in CPR and First Aid and have documentation of in-person training
• Must be able to pass a background check and be legally able to work in the US.
• Must have reliable car, current drivers license, current car insurance and a clean driving record

Education:

• A background in special education and/or behavior management is a must.
• Examples: DSP / Behavior Technician / Behavior Therapist / RBT / BCBA / ABA Therapist / MANDT / Special Education Teacher, and similar.
• Knowledge about art is a plus, but not a requirement

The position is under MD Department of Health / DDA's Self Direction Waiver. It is held in the participant's house and out in the community. The person is legally your employer and his parents oversee the operation. Payroll is administered via FMCS-ARCCCR. The position is monitored by an independent support broker & a service coordinator through Service Coordination. The FMCS-ARCCCR will do a background investigation after selection.
