What they need
Overview
The Director of Development leads contributed revenue for the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts: individual giving, grants and institutional funding, corporate partnerships, donor relations, and campaign readiness. The Director builds and leads a small development team, partners closely with the President & COO and the Board, and serves as a primary face of the organization with its funders. This is a building role: contributed revenue is a strategic growth priority for the organization, and a capital campaign for a major facility is on the horizon. The right candidate is energized by constructing a complete development program from the ground up.
Duties
Strategy and leadership
- Develop and execute the annual development plan with contributed revenue goals across individual, institutional, corporate, and event channels.
- Supervise and develop the development team, currently the Annual Giving Manager, with planned growth to include a Development Assistant, a Manager of Grants, and marketing/communications support per the department staffing plan.
- Partner with the President & COO and Board on fundraising strategy, board giving, and funder relationships; staff board development activity as assigned.
- Build the case for support that connects the PAC’s mission, momentum, and facility needs to donor investment.
Individual and major giving
- Build and manage a portfolio of individual and major gift prospects through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
- Establish the major-gifts pipeline and moves-management discipline, with the Director carrying the top of the portfolio personally.
Grants and institutional giving
- Personally write and manage major grant requests (generally $50,000 and above), including Alaska’s key institutional funders.
- Own the foundation, corporate, and government funding calendar: prospecting, applications, reporting, and relationship stewardship.
- Coordinate grant-funded project reporting with program and finance staff so every award is fully expended and accurately reported.
Campaign and endowment readiness
- Dedicate approximately twenty percent of time to the capital campaign, in coordination with campaign leadership and counsel.
- Lead campaign-readiness groundwork: prospect base development, feasibility preparation, and campaign counsel selection
- Develop the long-term endowment and planned-giving program that provides long-term support for the building and the organization.
Donor operations and compliance
- Own donor data standards and CRM discipline; coordinate gift processing, acknowledgment, and reconciliation with the Business Office.
- Maintain gift acceptance standards, donor intent documentation, and ethical fundraising practice consistent with AFP standards.
Other duties
- Represent ACPA at community and funder events; maintain a professional work environment.
- Other duties as assigned within the scope of work and abilities.
Education and Experience
- Seven or more years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, including personally closing major gifts and managing institutional funding relationships.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience and the judgment to build a small team well.
- Capital or endowment campaign experience strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of the Alaska funding landscape strongly preferred; CFRE a plus.
- Strong CRM and donor-database proficiency; excellent writing and public presence.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Stand, sit, stoop, walk, and navigate stairs; lift or move 25 pounds occasionally.
- Office environment with regular presence at performances, donor events, and community functions, including evenings and weekends as the event and giving calendar requires.
- Reasonable accommodation will be explored to enable persons with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
