What they need

About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional patient-focused leader to serve as Director of Patient Programs for an innovative biotechnology company developing personalized cancer therapies.

This is a highly unique role combining patient engagement, clinical and scientific understanding, and program leadership .

The Director, Patient Programs will be the primary trusted partner for patients and families throughout their journey, helping them understand complex personalized cancer treatment while ensuring they feel heard, supported and confident in the process.

The role will involve working with patients who may be navigating serious or life-limiting illness, complex treatment decisions and significant financial commitments. The successful candidate must therefore bring exceptional interpersonal skills, emotional maturity and the ability to establish trust quickly in highly sensitive circumstances.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Engagement

  • Serve as a trusted and consistent point of contact for patients and families throughout the patient-program process.
  • Build immediate rapport and establish strong relationships with patients from the first interaction.
  • Listen carefully to patients' concerns, priorities and circumstances and ensure the patient remains at the centre of every interaction.
  • Communicate with empathy, confidence and professionalism when discussing sensitive or emotionally difficult subjects.
  • Support patients who may be facing serious illness, uncertain outcomes or end-of-life circumstances.
  • Help patients and families understand the overall treatment process, expectations, timelines and next steps.
  • Be available to speak with patients outside standard business hours, including weekends, when circumstances require.
  • Meet patients where they are emotionally and practically rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Clinical & Scientific Communication

  • Use a strong understanding of oncology, immunology and/or cancer biology to help patients understand complex treatment concepts.
  • Translate scientific and clinical information into clear, accessible language appropriate for patients and families.
  • Discuss concepts such as personalized cancer treatment, immunology, genomic testing, treatment development and expected timelines.
  • Work closely with the broader scientific and clinical team when questions require deeper specialist expertise.
  • Review relevant patient information and help ensure that patient-specific considerations are communicated effectively to the internal team.
  • Maintain scientific credibility while ensuring conversations remain understandable, compassionate and patient-focused.

Patient Program Leadership

  • Own and oversee the overall patient-program process from initial engagement through the patient journey.
  • Establish consistent standards for patient communication, engagement and follow-up.
  • Develop processes and resources that ensure patients receive a high-quality and consistent experience.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the patient journey and strengthen the overall program.
  • Work cross-functionally with scientific, clinical and operational teams to ensure patient needs are effectively represented.
  • Help develop and scale the Patient Programs function as the organization grows.

Trust, Judgment & Responsibility

  • Handle highly confidential and sensitive patient information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Exercise sound judgment when navigating emotionally difficult or complex patient situations.
  • Recognize when issues require escalation to clinical, scientific or leadership stakeholders.
  • Maintain composure and reliability during challenging conversations.
  • Represent the organization with integrity and a genuine commitment to patient-first care.

Qualifications

We are open to candidates from a range of clinical, scientific and Medical Affairs backgrounds.

The strongest candidates will have:

  • Significant experience personally engaging with patients , particularly individuals dealing with serious, complex or life-changing medical conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and rapport quickly with patients and families.
  • Exceptional empathy, emotional intelligence and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience navigating sensitive, difficult or emotionally challenging conversations.
  • Strong clinical, scientific or medical understanding, ideally within oncology, immunology, cancer biology, cancer research or a related field .
  • The ability to understand complex scientific concepts and communicate them clearly to non-specialist audiences.
  • Strong judgment, professionalism and discretion when handling sensitive situations.
  • Experience taking ownership of a patient-facing, clinical, medical affairs or healthcare program.
  • Ability to operate independently in a rapidly evolving environment.
  • Willingness to engage directly with patients when circumstances require, including occasional weekend availability.

Preferred Backgrounds

Relevant experience may include:

  • Oncology Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • Oncology nursing
  • Immunology or oncology clinical practice
  • Clinical research involving significant patient interaction
  • Patient advocacy or patient-support programs
  • Medical Affairs / MSL roles with meaningful direct patient engagement
  • Precision oncology or genomic medicine
  • Cancer research
  • Rare disease or other complex-disease patient programs
  • Other clinical or healthcare environments involving vulnerable patient populations

An advanced scientific or clinical degree such as an MD, DO, PhD, PharmD, DNP, NP or PA qualification is welcomed but is not required if the candidate demonstrates the required patient-facing experience and scientific credibility.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate combines the heart of a patient advocate with the credibility of a clinical or scientific professional .

You may be a clinician who has spent years supporting patients through difficult diagnoses and treatment decisions. You may be a Medical Affairs professional who has developed deep expertise in oncology or immunology while maintaining meaningful patient relationships. Or you may come from another healthcare or scientific environment where trust, communication and complex patient interactions are central to your work.

What matters most is your ability to sit across from a patient or family member in a difficult moment, listen carefully, communicate clearly and honestly, and make them feel that they are being genuinely supported.

Scientific expertise is important, but the ability to connect with and advocate for patients is paramount .
