About Us:

Founded in 1975, Salas O’Brien is an employee-owned engineering and professional services firm focused on achieving impact for our clients, our team, and the world. We know that tomorrow’s requirements are today’s opportunities, and we are here to design lasting solutions for pressing challenges.

We work across a variety of industries providing integrated engineering and consulting services. Our specialized experience includes design for data centers, healthcare, science and technology, high-rise buildings, clean energy, education, and other building types as well as structural and building sciences, infrastructure asset management, advanced robotics, and more.

Our technical expertise is paired with an exceptional team of business development, human resources, finance and accounting, information technology, and marketing professionals, all of whom play a key role in bringing our commitments to life every day.

Job Summary:

Salas O’Brien is seeking an experienced electrical engineering leader to own the success of our Electrical discipline in Raleigh. You will lead the discipline as a business unit within the office, driving staffing, capacity, utilization, profitability, technical consistency, delivery readiness, and leadership development. You will build a high-performing team, strengthen delivery capacity, and ensure Electrical resources align with office priorities and project commitments. This is an exempt position.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Electrical discipline’s performance across staffing, capacity, utilization, profitability, technical quality, and delivery readiness.
  • Recruit, retain, coach, mentor, and develop Electrical staff and emerging technical leaders; lead performance reviews, development planning, and succession planning.
  • Own workload forecasting, capacity planning, and resource allocation to meet project schedules and office commitments.
  • Monitor utilization, workload, capacity, profitability, quality, and delivery metrics; identify risks early and drive corrective action.
  • Establish technical standards and engineering best practices; ensure consistent application of applicable codes and specifications and lead periodic QA/QC reviews.
  • Partner with group leads and project leaders to resolve staffing, delivery, and cross-functional issues while balancing immediate project needs with sustainable capacity and staff development.
  • Represent the Electrical discipline in office planning and leadership discussions; communicate significant performance, resource, quality, and delivery issues with clear recommended actions.

Advance Technical Excellence and Business Growth

  • Drive continuous improvement through lessons learned, knowledge sharing, process improvements, and consistent technical and delivery practices.
  • Maintain current knowledge of electrical codes, standards, technologies, and industry practices.
  • Support proposals, interviews, client relationships, and business-development efforts that require Electrical discipline leadership.
  • Coordinate Electrical staffing and delivery priorities across project teams and disciplines.
  • Operate in accordance with Salas O’Brien policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Professional Engineer licensure in North Carolina, with additional licensure as required for assigned work and applicable jurisdictions.
  • 10+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience, ideally in MEP consulting serving higher education, science and technology, state government, or similar institutional clients.
  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical staff, workloads, performance, resource planning, and project-delivery priorities.
  • Strong command of electrical design, documentation, coordination, QA/QC, applicable codes and standards, and project-delivery practices.
  • Proven ability to interpret utilization, workload, capacity, profitability, and delivery metrics and take decisive corrective action.

Leadership and Technology Capabilities

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, time-management, task-management, and teamwork skills.
  • The ability to build accountable teams, develop technical leaders, and create clear follow-through across competing priorities.
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PDF/Bluebeam.
  • General familiarity with Deltek, Newforma, and Smartsheet.

Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based in Raleigh, North Carolina. You will coordinate regularly with office leadership, Electrical staff, project teams, and cross-functional stakeholders. The role requires disciplined prioritization across people leadership, technical quality, resource planning, production coordination, and strategic execution.

Extra hours are required when workload and project deadlines demand them.

No regular travel is required; occasional business travel occurs as needed.

Compensation & Benefits:

This role is also eligible for performance-based bonuses and a comprehensive U.S. based benefits package, including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
