What they need
Who we are
We own and operate the electricity distribution network that provides South Cantabrians with power. We are proud to be community-owned and connect over 34,000 customers throughout the region.
At Alpine Energy, our people sit at the centre of everything we do. Our Culture Commitment guides how we work together so every person feels safe, optimistic, energised, involved, and appreciated. We empower each other with trust and respect, take ownership of our words and actions, and act with integrity. By living these behaviours every day, we stay connected as one team and create a workplace where everyone can thrive.
We are considered an essential lifeline service, playing a significant role in our community, contributing to the growth and prosperity of South Canterbury and New Zealand’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
We are in a period of substantial investment and with that comes exciting career opportunities for the right candidates to join our high performing team.
The role
Join us at Alpine Energy in Timaru as a Line Mechanic and help keep South Canterbury connected.
Working directly for the network owner, you’ll maintain, construct and repair overhead electricity lines and pole-mounted equipment across our region. The work is varied and hands-on, including planned construction and maintenance, network upgrades, fault response and switching when authorised.
This is a permanent role based in Timaru and an opportunity to bring your experience to a community-owned network where you can continue developing your skills and see the impact of your work across the communities we serve. Relocation and short term accommodation support is available for a successful candidate relocating.
As a Line Mechanic in our Field team, you will:
- Maintain, construct and repair overhead electricity lines, poles and pole-mounted equipment
- Deliver planned construction, network upgrades and fault response across South Canterbury
- Operate equipment safely and perform network switching when authorised
What you’ll need

- Relevant electricity supply or distribution experience with strong practical problem-solving skills
- A strong commitment to safety, teamwork and getting the job done well
Nice to haves
- NZ Certificate in Electricity Supply Level 4 in Fault Response
- NZ Certificate in Electricity Supply Level 3 in Field Switching
- PHC competency and/or authorised network switching experience
Making the move to Timaru
Relocating is a significant decision, so the opportunity needs to fit both your career and personal goals.
Working directly for the network owner you'll see the impact of your work across the communities we serve. You’ll join a team with a strong focus on safety, practical development and supporting each other to deliver reliable electricity for South Canterbury.
Timaru offers an alternative to big-city living without asking you to take a step back in your career. With shorter commutes, the coast and mountains nearby, and more room for life outside of work, South Canterbury gives you the opportunity to build your career while making the most of your time away from it.
It’s what we mean by Alpine, where work meets lifestyle.
What we offer
At Alpine we focus on creating a place where people genuinely want to come to work.
This shows up in the day-to-day. It’s practical wellbeing support that works for you, flexibility where it makes sense, and recognition that feels real. From an annual wellbeing allowance to medical insurance, on-site health support, and regular social events, our benefits are designed with you in mind; focused on making a real difference.
Our Timaru office helps too. With panoramic views, great coffee, fresh fruit, and spaces designed for both focus and connection, it’s an environment that supports how you work best.
You’ll also experience a strong health and safety culture, ongoing development opportunities, and a team that takes pride in supporting each other and the wider community.
If you’re curious about everything we offer, we’re always happy to talk through it during the recruitment process
