Drafter/ Project Manager - Architectural Millwork

Zalla Industries is an architectural millwork firm building custom work for commercial and high-end interior projects in New York. We're looking for someone to join our team as both a drafter and a project manager.

About the Role

This is a dual role: you'll be both our drafter and the project manager for your projects. You'll get to know each project inside and out, because you'll take the field measurements, draw the shop drawings, and then see what you drew get installed. Along the way you'll work with clients to confirm specs and dates, arrange site access, and resolve issues as they come up. Once your drawings are complete, you'll hand production off to our production team and keep tracking installation due dates. You'll also be responsible for ensuring that subcontractors on your projects have what they need and are delivering on schedule. Expect to spend about 80% of your time drafting and taking field measurements, and about 20% working with clients and subcontractors.

What You'll Do

• Take field measurements and verify existing conditions at job sites
• Develop shop drawings from architectural and construction drawings, specifications, and field dimensions
• Manage drawing revisions, submittals, and RFIs
• Maintain and safeguard all shop drawings and submittals, following Zalla's digital system for storing and naming files
• Communicate with clients and GCs about dates, specs, and issues that come up, responding to inquiries and resolving difficulties and bottlenecks
• Be responsible for communicating with our subcontractors
• Coordinate site visits and access with clients
• Help coordinate pre-installation requirements, such as in-wall blocking, brackets, and hold-to dimensions
• Hand off completed drawings and project information to the production team
• Meet regularly with the installation manager and production manager to review the status of your projects
• Track installation due dates and keep clients and the team informed of changes in completion dates, both in the shop and on site

What We're Looking For

• An excellent drafter, with 3+ years of experience in architectural millwork, casework, or a closely related field, who can look at a set of drawings and quickly grasp what's being asked for
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or other drafting software
• Intimate knowledge of how millwork is built, including materials, joinery, and finishes
• The ability to find practical solutions to problems and to speak with authority when making decisions in the field
• A collaborative, low-ego approach: you welcome input from the shop and the field, and you're comfortable saying "I got that wrong" or "let me check with the shop"
• Exceptional organization: you keep files, revisions, and deadlines in order across multiple projects
• Willingness to follow established file naming and document control procedures
• Good people skills and the patience to work with clients, including through changes and difficult moments
• Clear written and verbal communication with clients, GCs, and shop staff
• Comfortable traveling to job sites for measurements
• Experience with Monday.com or similar project management tools is a plus
• Spanish-speaking is a plus
