Drill Operator

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Drill Operator with proven hands-on experience operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment, specifically a Ditch Witch AT32 or similar directional drilling machine.

THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY-LEVEL POSITION. The ideal candidate must have prior professional experience operating directional drilling equipment and be able to step onto a jobsite and perform drilling operations safely and efficiently with minimal supervision. Candidates without previous HDD/drill operator experience will not be considered.

The Drill Operator will be responsible for operating drilling equipment for underground utility installation, as well as assisting with excavation, utility work, and other construction activities. Experience with additional heavy equipment is highly valued.

Responsibilities

• Operate Ditch Witch AT32 and/or similar horizontal directional drilling equipment on active construction sites.
• Perform directional drilling operations for underground utility installation.
• Safely and accurately operate drilling equipment while monitoring bore paths, ground conditions, equipment performance, and jobsite hazards.
• Work with the drilling crew to properly set up, operate, and break down drilling equipment.
• Assist with locating and identifying existing underground utilities before and during drilling operations.
• Operate other heavy construction equipment, including excavators, loaders, backhoes, water trucks, and similar machinery, as needed.
• Assist with utility installation, trenching, excavation, grading, and site preparation.
• Perform daily equipment inspections and routine preventative maintenance.
• Recognize equipment problems and communicate maintenance or repair needs.
• Follow project plans, specifications, safety procedures, and applicable OSHA requirements.
• Maintain a safe work environment and properly identify potential hazards before and during drilling operations.
• Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, inspections, maintenance, and work performed.
• Work efficiently as part of a construction crew while maintaining high standards for safety and quality.

Required Qualifications

• Proven professional experience operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment.
• Hands-on experience operating a Ditch Witch AT32 or comparable directional drilling machine is REQUIRED.
• This is an experienced position. Candidates without prior directional drilling experience will NOT be considered.
• Ability to independently operate drilling equipment safely and efficiently.
• Experience with underground utility installation and/or utility construction.
• Experience working around and identifying underground utilities.
• Experience operating heavy construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, backhoes, and water trucks.
• Strong understanding of drilling operations, jobsite safety, and underground construction.
• Basic mechanical knowledge with the ability to perform routine equipment inspections and maintenance.
• Ability to troubleshoot basic equipment issues and recognize when repairs are needed.
• Valid CDL is preferred/required depending on project and equipment transportation requirements.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites.
• Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
• Strong work ethic and ability to work independently and as part of a crew.

Strong consideration will be given to candidates with experience operating:

• Ditch Witch AT32
• Ditch Witch directional drills
• Vermeer directional drills
• Other horizontal directional drilling equipment
• Underground utility installation equipment
• Fiber, electrical, gas, or water utility installation equipment
• Excavators, loaders, backhoes, and other heavy construction equipment

Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 – 50.0 per week
